Low power radio stations

I'm not in the industry, but I seem to recall the FCC allowing low power broadcasts without a license? If so is there anyone in the Altoona area doing this and where and what frequency? Does anyone know how to do this? I'd like to give it a whirl.

We've got enough high power, medium power, and not much power radio stations on the air today in this damned market. Do us all a favor and stay "off the air"! We're more than full thank you.

Well, maybe if an Altoona radio station played a rock format that didn't repeat the same classic song over and over and over, and over, and over. And maybe if they didn't play all the bands that come from the same sperm pool that birthed uninspired crap like Nickelback, Theory of a Deadman, Seether, etc. I probably wouldn't be able to afford to do it anyway. So I guess I will continue to download songs and listen to my mp3 player and laugh as radio continues to be a dying animal.

There is one LPFM station in your area, WMES-LP.

Also, in order to see whether there are any available frequencies, you could access http://www.recnet.com/cdbs/lpfm.php.

This is a website that provides theoretical channel availabilities. Please note that the site asks you to establish various criteria when seeking a channel. It is my understanding that because translators are "permissive" services, an LPFM can displace a translator.

Good luck, there is always room for one more at the table. ;D

You can feel at least somewhat fortunate that the Dial Global format on Q94 plays the songs that it does. Most larger market classic rock stations program even fewer tracks. Cox radio loves to play the same 200 classic rock hits over and over and over. Then twice a year they drop about 20-30 songs that the music test show people tired of (no wonder people tired of them...any classic rock song that you heard 2 times every day would become lame) and replace them with the same number of songs. They only add a song if they drop a song because you wouldn't want to play 201 songs on your 200 song jukebox.

I think Altoona is lucky to have Q94 rockin the airwaves and now streaming online. Thanks to the internet, there is no more static when listening in the Cove. (I also see WRTA is streaming and McKay has a blog on the site).

Don't listen to 99.1. I think the library has all of 30 classic titles and 3 currents. Is it the Simpson curse of IYQ that makes that station an enternal laughing stock?

Is WALY a low-power station? I used to listen when they had the oldies floormat, and when I would start down the Geeseytown side of Frankstown Road the signal
went down hill really fast.

No, they're licensed to Bellwood. They are a Bellwood radio station and in if you live in Bellwood, the signal's fine and dandy. I note that they don't have too much Bellwood news and/or public service on however.

you can run under the part 15 rules for fm, but the restrictions that are placed on power and antenna make it useless unless you only want to cover the inside of your house. I think the max range with the restricted output and antenna size is someting around 200 feet.

Satelite man was pondering whether WALY is actually a low power station these days. I'm afraid I don't have the answer.

WALY is a standard Class A station. The ERP is kind of low though. 300 some watts. They are licensed to Bellwood, but the transmitter is on Forever's tower on Wopsy along with Froggy, and Rocky.

I have a 300 watt floodlight on my satellite storage shed in Geeseytown. So, if I moved my floodlight to Wopsy I could in theory see my light in the same area which WALY covers?
