Low power stations on channel 51 and above

It was my understanding that all channels 52 and above had to sign off on June 12th. Are low powers exempt? We have a low power on channel 53 in Atlanta that is still on the air. They have construction permits to move to channel 50 analog and 35 digital but neither on the air. This is a Daystar affiliate.

Does anyone know the rules for low power analogs above 51?

Low power stations are allowed to use channels 52 thru 59. They are a secondary service, so they must not interfere with any primary service, and must accept any interference from a primary service. That primary service used to be full-power TV stations; now it will be the new services on those frequencies.

Still, many LPTV stations, especially those in urban areas, are applying for displacement relief to get in core. In many cases, the displacement relief will also be accompanied by a switch to digital.

Will All LPTV's be allowed to broadcast in Analog Forever?

I don't know if this question was asked but what about ALL LPTV's. Are they allowed to broadcast in Analog forever or will they be eventually moved to Digital?

The FCC has announced they will eventually need to convert to digital, but they haven't set a deadline yet.

Economic burdens on low-powered broadcasters were cited as the reason why there is no deadline for them to convert as of now. Of course...this was said prior to the economic downturn.

All LPTV stations are considered secondary users, even in band (Low power digital TV are secondary to full-power digital TV). For Channels 2-51, full power TV stations are considered primary users. For 52-83, cell-phone providers and public safety are primary users. There is more use from cell-phones and public safety of their space then from full-power TV, so that is why many LPTV stations (that are not converting to digital immediately) are applying to change channels to get out of dodge. Less likely to be involuntarily displaced.

Most of the bigger LPTV stations are in the process of going digital. The smallers ones probably don't currently have the money. I do see a 2010 or 2011 deadline for LPTV stations to go digital.

Personally, I say 2011 at the earliest -- the first deadline for full-powered stations was revealed about two years before the deadline.
