Low Rated FM Stations In Hampton Roads

Hi Today i'm going to talk about some of the low rated stations below a 3.0 Rating

WPYA-FM (2.8) WHAT HAPPENED!!!!! They had a 4.3 before the new winter ratings came out. Hopefully when spring ratings com out in Aug they will be back to over 3.0

WXMM-FM (2.6) Hampton Roads Rock Station? I think NOT. Rival FM99 WNOR is still leading with a 3.3 Rating and was over 4.0 in most of the latest ratings and I look for that to grow in the Aug Ratings. Swiching 100.5 to Rock was NOT a good idea. The Highest rating MAX has gotten was a 2.8. So I suggest to you Max Media, swich MAX to Somthing Else.

WUSH-FM (2.4) I'm Not going to talk much on US106 Because it will get better the longer the station. It Last was a 1.3 When it was still Energy. Good Move Sinclair!!!

WROX-FM (1.8) I Think There are two causes for the Bad Rating For 96X. One It has a very Poor Signel over the Hampton Roads Area. Two Mancow and Mike and Bob have to go because they are also driving the ratings for 96X Down. I actually think 96X is a good station but needs to work on those two areas of concern.

WJCD-FM (1.7) I Think it is Another Flaw by Clear Channel. They Have taken Away two of the Jazz format stations in DC and Baltimore. Could This be next? If it Does It may simulcast once again with 92.1 and put the oldies format on 107.7.

WCDG-FM (1.3) What were you thinking Clear Channel? I think If you want to Continue the oldies You should take the Low rated 107.7 and Simulcast the oldies format on 107.7 like some of the stations you have in the old days. Like Lite FM for Example.

WXTG-FM (0.9) Believe it or not, This is the Higest rating The Game has gotten in its 2 year history. It was a complete failure from day 1. THe Good Thing is it
Simulcasts on 1490 AM. So to get back into good ratings, Put Music Back on 102.1 and let the Sports talk Format only be on 1490.

WCXL-FM (0.6) Not Bad For Beach 104 from Northeast NC. I've listened to this station and i think it is great. It is excatly what Hampton Roads Needs in a good Hot AC Station. So i Except in a few years. This will be some good compitition for 94.9 the Point WPTE.

WXGM-FM (0.5) Gets Good Signel on the Peninsula and not a bad station either. But if it wants to make a good inpact on the full Hampton Roads Market. It Needs a little better signel on the southside. That is a little hard to do though because of 99.1 The Sound WVOD in Manteo NC.

Well That is my opinion on how the low rated Hampton Roads Market stations are doing. Thanks Everyone and Good Day.

Well I agree with most of your findings.

WUSH: Its about time we get another country station to listen to. Although going Classic Country may have been a good idea (*Remembers 100.5 WCMS*)

Beach 104 is one of my favorite stations and can be heard easily in Portsmouth with a decent radio. They are far better than The Point.
Cool 92.1 is doing meh, but keep in mind there is no money being put into it. (That plus the fact Oldies isn't doing so well these days.) If they had live local djs and better jingles then perhaps they would do better. They did add a lot more '70 music and with the satilite shows they have '80s music too.

I do find it odd that Classic Rock 106.9 The Fox is doing so well what with its 'old music' but they are doing very well.

That's just some of my thoughts.

Curious to see if the Smooth AC format stays on 107.7 when the COLs swap for WKUS and WJCD...

I'm so glad beach 104 turned itself around...cuz 6 years ago before max got it...it was a 100kw satellite station..runing Jones Radio Networks all day..I wonder whatever happened to the old studio complex that was down at the tower....

92.1 had its best ratings when it was urban "92.1 The Beat", the 2nd or 3rd incarnation of urban on that freq. when CC norfolk was trying to shut down WWHV 102.1.

IMHO..WOWI has slipped a lot, the only thing WOWI has going for them is their mixshows. since WWHV is no longer a threat, WOWI removed tons of songs out their playlists mainly what we call southern hip-hop. the PD and several mixers have said on air that they don't like that style of music and refuse to play it. but when WWHV was around..they did play it.

WWHV was a cool, innovative station which would have been successful if they had had enough power to cover the market. The fact is, most of the stations you listed as low rated have the same problem---they don't cover the market. On the other hand, with 100kw, 106.9 has the most powerful signal in the market, so that partly answers the question of why they do well ratings wise....

Ratings Just Came Out and These are the updates
Hi Today i'm going to talk about some of the low rated stations below a 3.0 Rating

WPYA-FM [Before It was 2.8 Now it went up to a 3.9]. I Did Say in My last post that this station was going to rebound and it did. Good move Sinclair!!!!

WXMM-FM [Before It was a 2.6 Now it dropped to a 1.4] Even More of a decline for Max FM. PLEASE MAX MEDIA CHANGE MAX FM TO SOMETHING ELSE!!!!!!

WUSH-FM [Before it was a 2.4 now it went up to a 2.6] US106 Continues to grow and topple Eagle. I still Think this was a good move by Sinclair.

WROX-FM [Before It Was a 1.8 now it dropped to a 1.5] 96X is still on the wrong Track with Mancow and Mike and Bob. But I think if they get a better signel and put their new Opie and Anthony show in the Morning, 96X may rebound and get a good rating in the next set.

WJCD-FM [Before it was 1.7 now it went up to a 2.1] I think They are adding more Varitey in their playlist and making better inprovements on the station. They still they need to simulcast with 92.1 to be better.

WCDG-FM [Before it was 1.3 now it dropped to a 1.1] Oldies is not working here Clear Channel!!!!

WXTG-FM [Before it was a 0.9 now it dropped to a 0.4] For this station to be good keep the sports format on 1490 AM and put music on 102.1. It Shows with the latest rating.

WCXL-FM [Before It Was a 0.6 Now they aren't on the ratings at all] I'm suprised that Beach 104 Didn't make the ratings this time. I still think they are good commpitition with WPTE

WXGM-FM [Before It Was a 0.6 Now they dropped to a 0.4] Not bad but they need to keep working on the station and also work more on the signel to be successfull.

Other Notabales

WNOR Dropped to a 3.0 rating from a 3.3 but I think they will rebound.
WAFX Dropped to a 3.1 from a 3.7.
and WVKL is the Higest Rated Station for the third rating in a row.

How many watts does Max operate at? They should put some money behind it and go full fledge CHR. Be a straight up top 40 station. I know the Zone didn't work, but from what I remember on my business travels through the area they kept screwing with it. Put Ryan Seacrest on your Midday Show, and don't launch the station without a morning show. Even if you can't afford a local morning show, at least get a syndicated one with a good track record in multiple markets.

Jeff Berlin be the VO guy.
Kelly Kelly Kelly as VO chick.

Don't play to much hip hop during the day, then open up the hip hop a little bit more with the night show.

Channel 100 point 5?
100 point 5 The Zone?

Market it with billboards, and tv commercials "Hit Music has returned to Hampton Roads". Launch it commercial free, and never allow commercial breaks over 5 minutes long.

That area has 4 different rock stations, 4 different AC sounding stations, and only one station that sounds somewhat CHR (Z104...hip hop with the top 40 presentation). It could work.

Speaking of Seacrest, why did they put AT40 on the wave? I think they may already be thinking CHR for one of the stations in the building.

1061 The Zone biggest problem I think was the coverage area. It was weak and sometimes you can hear WRDU 1061 from Raliegh, NC bleeding in ( and that has not changed until the upgrade of 106.1)

I think 100.5 needs to go CHR though, less hip-hop in the day and more of that at night.

I think if done right, it can work....on a stick that covers the market....100.5 does that.

If they don't Clear Channel may try it on 107.7 when the COL's get offically swaped. Or Sinclair may put it on 96.1 or a declining BOB-FM 93.7.

For Beach 104..they won't give WPTE anything. They are out of market and focus to the Outer Banks..for those who can listen to Beach 104...just enjoy it. On the penisula you are screwed for that. Any numbers in Hampton Roads are just a bouns for them

WXGM-FM is the same way. There foucs is Gloucseter county and Williamsburg, Newport News, York. They do give traffic for tunnels but that is for diehard listeners maybe coming from (or going to) Norfolk back to Gloucester/York/Williamsburg (or vice versa). Any number in Hampton Roads are again bouns for them, they are really out of the market and focus to the people of Middle Penisula/Northern Neck.

106.1's problem was not the signal, they were hip hop one month, rock the next month, and techno the next month. Obviously the signal isn't the issue because 106.1 as country seems to be pulling in the biggest ratings that stick has ever seen without covering the whole area.

Why would Sinclair put CHR on 93.7? That stations 12+ seems to average around a 3 or 4 share 12+, that tells me that their breakdowns must be descent.

what I find amazing, is that there isn't a single station that carries pure CHR. a balanced evenly blended mix of todays hits..a little rock, pop, hiphop, etc. there are how many rock stations and hiphop stations? dont try to call Z104 a true CHR. look at their playlist (or at least the "top 9 at 9")

...Norfolk needs to improve and have some AAA and top-40CHR, but then again, look at their demographics ::)

alright, mancow isn't good at all!

but how dare you talk about the mike and bob show that way! it is the greatest radio program in the world today! sure, it has gone through changes (it's been almost 8 years they happen), but overall still quality. if you think they should be gone, you don't know what you're talking about and sure do not know quality radio!

Z104 is CHR/RHY and one of the best in the country...and look at the ratings...they are now beating WOWI 103 Jamz (urban)

GO Z104 !!!! I love them.

A CHR/Top 40 would be great, but could hurt Z104 "the 757's party station"

I think a CHR/Top 40 going against Z104 would be awesome... and if done right both could be Top 5 stations.

New Ratings Came Out Lets See How the Bad Stations I mentioned did

WXMM-FM [Before It was a 1.4 Now it rose to a 2.3] = I Think FM99's Move To Alice Cooper for Nights Bought Max Back in the Rock Hunt.

WUSH-FM [Before it was a 2.6 Now it dropped to a 1.8]= I still Think this was a good move by Sinclair. US106 Needs to get on its New Tower Soon and it will do better.

WROX-FM [Before It Was a 1.8 now it rose to a 2.0]= 96X Has Done Better With Opie and Anthony. But they Need To Put Them in The Mornings to do even better.

WJCD-FM [Before it was 2.1 now it went up to a 2.2]= Still on good Track But They will Move to a Bigger Tower soon So The numbers will increase.

WNOR-FM [Before it was 3.0 now it dropped to a 2.8] = The Alice Copper Move to Nights Was A Bad Idea And there new voice guy sucks. Please Change Back to what you had before.

WCDG-FM [Before it was 1.1 now it dropped to a 0.7] Oldies is STILL not working here Clear Channel!!!!

WXTG-FM [Before it was a 0.4 now it rose to a 0.7] For this station to continue be good keep the sports format on 1490 AM and put music on 102.1.

Other Notabales

WAFX Rose to a 4.2 rating from a 3.1 with Arlo in The Morning.
There Was a 3 way tie for fourth place all with 5.2 ratings, Max Media's WGH-FM , Clear Channel's WKUS-FM ,and Max Media's WXEZ-FM
and WVKL is the Higest Rated Station for the fourth rating in a row.
