Hey gang,

I haven't been as active on these boards as I used to, but I was curious about filling in some Lowcountry FM history gaps on Wikipedia. Perhaps somebody with a few more gray hairs can help out:

92.1 Parris Island/Beaufort...WGCQ (1985-87), WBHH (1987-90), WOCW (1990-97). Also, did 92.1 have anywhere near the signal 103.1 has?

104.9 Ridgeland/Hilton Head...WXRY (1985-88), WZBZ (1988-90). I remember seeing something on Google way back when saying WXRY 104.9 was a Dr. Demento affiliate in the 1980's...If I'm not mistaken, Dr. Demento usually only played on CHR and rock stations...

To some of the lowcountry radio questions...WOCW -was -I say-was licensed to Parris Island...
the calls were because for a period -it was owned by OC Welch (the car dealer)...it was oldies
and OC went through people like x lax through an old widow woman...it would have done very
well as a LOCAL Beaufort station if someone who knew what they were doing would've owned it...
sorry but the truth is the truth...104.9 was (and may still be) license to Ridgeland and I worked
there as well in the early 90's,...studios were on 178 in a strip center -they were oldies (just as
92.1)..with a bit more Beach music, and to say the least had ownership and finanical problems..
another case where it really could have been something...I could write a book on that one...

Dr. Demento was on a lot of AOR stations, too. It all depended on who wanted to run it and where Westwood One needed to clear the program. In Columbia, Dr. Demento ran on Sunday evenings on WUSC, until they started distributing it exclusively by satellite.
 
I used to listen to Dr. Demento on Y-102.9 in Hickory, NC. It was sort of an AOR station, though they claimed to be top 40.

Then the FM moved to Charlotte and became what is now Lite 102.9. The AM, which was AC and is now Rush Limbaugh, kept it at least for a while.

I was going to say something about WLOW, but everything I know about the station I've put on Wikipedia. With no source.
