Lowell Sun: WCAP Sale Imminent

Wow, if true, that'll be the end of an era.

Lots of very successful people have gone up the stairs over Cappy's Copper Kettle and moved on to great things.

I remember the news competition between 'CAP and WLLH. What a great place to make your bones as a newsperson.

"MAURICE COHEN's NORTHEAST RADIO, INC. is selling Talk WCAP-A/LOWELL, MA to CLARK SMIDT's MERRIMACK VALLEY RADIO, LLC for $2.66 million ($100,000 escrow, $2.028 million cash, $532,000 in a promissory note). The seller has owned the station since its launch in the 1950s. "

It is the end of an era, but Ike is gone, Morris is really old, and it's time.....

Having worked for "Lowell's #1 Station" on 2 different occasions...I wonder if Maurice and Ike ever kept a list of all the employees. I'll bet the number would fill a large telephone directory? ;)

Seriously...best wishes to Maurice along with any other WCAP survivors? :)

Seems a lot of money for a stand-alone AM. I wouldn't underestimate Clark Smidt, but I think he's got his work cut out for him to make a profit with the place. The Cohens could get away with a fairly light revenue stream since the place had been paid for forever. How did the station do back in "the day"? I never gave them much thought...liked WLLH better.

Doesn't WCAP have drastically different day and night patterns...something like a narrow pattern north days and a similarly narrow pattern south at night?

WCAP is a very good facility. 980 on the dial right next to WBZ. 5,000 watts day and night. Daytime: non-directional. Nighttime: beams to east, southeast and south. Nighttime nulls towards Fitchburg and ManchesterNH. Nighttime, comes in good along a good stretch of I-495 and Rt 3, and even along Rt128 in the Burlington area.

Bob, WCAP is DA-2, I have spent hours doing the monitor points in the 80's,
day pattern has a very slight pull in on a SW radial that protects WESO on 970
in Southbridge
Night pattern is very similar to the night pattern of the old WCOP on 1150 or whatever it is these days, three minor lobes off the back of the pattern centered on a NW direction and the majority of the 5Kw goes SE toward Boston and the North Shore
