Lowest KUBE ratings ever, in December PPM

I would have never guessed that, though the format does well enough that I see no reason to completely blow it up.
To be fair, the playlist on Jack skews much further to 90’s and 2000’s music than what you would ever hear on KZOK or KJR. KJAQ seems like a great compromise for a listener who likes older music, but not songs that are “classic hits” (or, at least not enough to hear them on a loop).

9 stations in the 60's? That impressive! The golden age of radio1955-1995. You really hit the sweet spot. David, do consult, I'm sure you're getting big bucks to moderate this board!
There is more than money... this is a "labor of love" after 62 years in radio.

And the Jack implementations are much broader in years than the typical classic hits formats.

In the top 50 markets, Jack licenses are for station and market specific consulting, while in the smaller one the format is syndicated.

Wow, not even sure what this thread is about anymore. Too much friction among users. I think it started with KUBE FM which had a lot of users in the beginning, fell off somewhat, had some rebounds, changed frequencies (whoops). and trying to rebound. In the end the owners need to reinstall profits. Otherwise goodbye.

Can't help but think that KUBE being moved in frequency, as well as the format changes, didn't help things much. the original listeners to it during the 80s have moved on to other formats, and probably the 90s listeners have as well. So what does that leave?

Come on, didn't you used to program a station? One station among a group and 6+ being sited. Nuff said.

It appears KUBE is playing throwbacks heavy in rotation now and has changed their slogan to “Seattle’s #1 for Hip Hop and the best Throwbacks” so it appears they are trying to align themselves more with Hot 103.7.

The positioning shift and music tweak are very similar to what was implemented at WJMN Boston many months back. The moves are working well in Boston. It will be interesting to see if they also work for KUBE.

WJMN at one point was down to a 1.3 or 1.4 share. They are now in the 3's. WJMN perhaps also benefited from the demise of Amp Radio 103.3.

That's interesting about WJMN. I was told once that KUBE was basically a west coast version of WJMN. Is that an accurate statement?

It is (or was?)

R-I is reporting the station is stunting and redirecting listeners to Hits 106.1.

I suspect Sports is likely forthcoming, but other possibilities could include:

-Spanish language programming of some sort;
-Rhythmic AC;
-Alternative;
-News/Talk.

Heck, I won't rule out AC or even Country.

I may have been correct weeks back about lousy ratings leading to lousy billing (despite a few naysayers here), and speculating something "seriously wrong" was occurring with regard to KUBE's performance. See my posts from January 2. With the recent music shift, though, I did believe there was a chance KUBE would be given more time to turn things around.

When I suggested back then that I would bet that KUBE was underachieving in the demos that mattered, another poster referred to that as a "sucker's bet.". Maybe I'm not such a sucker after all. 🙂

As in, KJR-FM? Or something like that? KKJR-FM Maybe.

Both stations are stuck in about the same hole. If they think the only thing that's holding it back is being on AM, why not?

It's Kraken season!

-Spanish language programming of some sort;

In a market that is less than 8% Hispanic? Really?

-Alternative;

In a market with KEXP? Really?

Here's the link:

KEXP preempts a commercial AAA more than anything.

Moving 950's programming to FM would be the smart move, IMO.

As for your objections over the notion of a format geared to Latinos, I submit to you 97.7 in Boston (granted, that is a much weaker signal with much smaller power bill). I think 93.3 going in that type of direction is a longshot. Still a top 5 possibility nonetheless.

Options 2 through 5 are listed in no particular order; I did not mean to suggest Spanish language programming was the second most likely option.

Sports on FM? Maybe.

Rhythmic AC? Movin "moved" away from that.

Alternative? iHeart's actually fared well vs KROQ in LA, but I don't see much growth in that format for them.

KEXP is a factor - but in a sense, it's almost been two stations. Pre and post Summer 2020. Their FAQ admits as much, the "indie rock" focus of KCMU/earlier KEXP vs a more diverse format now. To their credit! It's working well and the ratings successes are admirable. But I don't view modern KEXP as a Triple A. Strictly speaking, it's not "alternative" in the sense Audacy or iHeart would know it either.

KEXP is more akin to the "Urban Alternative" format concept in some ways that's being promoted by Radio Milwaukee, Mike Henry/Paragon and others. It's a music discovery station with a very inclusive, listener driven mission. But it doesn't occupy a traditional Triple A space. You could pull up years of archives, put it on an HD2, and it would almost sound like a separate station/format from what it is today.

Audacy (Entercom at the time) had a Triple A in Seattle. KMTT - The Mountain. Solid radio station. Today, it's throwback rhythmic. I love the format, but there's just no room in the commercial model for it in Seattle, at least not from those operators. Having said that, if I were KBCS I'd be considering playing to that audience in a more cohesive way. Older demos and donor money. I could see a noncomm upper demo Triple A coexisting with modern KEXP.

I doubt 93.3 goes talk - is anyone at iHeart/Premiere really needing to clear Clay Travis and Buck Sexton in blue Seattle up against the KIRO/KTTH combo?

I have a feeling they are flipping to a Spanish. I went on the Tune In app on my phone. I went on KUBE 93.3 underneath it the title says Selena. That tells me they are flipping to some kind of Spanish format.

- Seattle doesn't have enough of a Hispanic population to need another Spanish station. If they did, Salem or Lotus would've already jumped on it.
- Rhythmic AC isn't likely either; you might as well just shift KUBE rather than moving it to HD2.
- Alternative: Not in Seattle
- News/Talk: With KNWN and KOMO in the market, it's unlikely.

I suspect a Sports format, a simulcast of KJR 950 or KFNQ 1050 - likely the former. Per Twitter, RadioInsight mentioned this to me: "We’ve heard for months now liklihood is 950 KJR simulcast coming." This was in response to a Tweet of mine mentioning the possibility of an FM expansion of KHHO 850 (BIN Seattle).

I wouldn't rely on the Tune In app anyway. For all you know, they could've been playing Selena Gomez or had someone named Selena on the air.
