Lowest KUBE ratings ever, in December PPM

I can't see active. Not a lot of growth in that format and KISW is solid in part because of heritage and a long term investment in personality. The music alone isn't carrying that station and there's not enough in the music to carry a station that's only offering that.

You are most likely right about that. Who knows what iHeart has plans for 93.3.

If it is a music format, there are not many options in my opinion that iHeart would go with.
  1. Hot AC has already been tried and failed, you also risk some cannibalization of Hits.
  2. AC is also probably out because the arena is very crowded with Warm and The Sound, and could cannibalize KJR-FM.
  3. Anything rock is probably out. As is, iHeart is counterprogramming KZOK, KJR-FM, and Jack. Alt maybe could work but they're certainly aren't going to do much better than The End, and a lot of the 90's alt is already being played on KZOK and Jack.
  4. Country, classic hip-hop, or rhythmic would all be splitting an audience that isn't very big so it's unlikely any of those are going to happen.
You're left with the strong possibility of KJR-AM gaining an FM simulcast. This would give them a big leg up on 710, and could make things a lot more competitive for iHeart as they could lure away the Seahawks or the Mariners from 710.

Because KUBE is clearly about to change formats, and KJAQ is not. Jack is a Top 10 station in Seattle and iHeart would be foolish to screw with it. These multiple flips of stations are very expensive and usually don't work. They confuse listeners who have their stations on pre-sets. So no, moving Jack to 93.3 is very unlikely. It's easier to move the sports to the new sports station.
That makes sense, but I'm still not buying it. If that were the case, the timing of this flip seems really odd to me. If I were iHeart, I'd wait till the hockey season is over then flip 93.3, thereby not messing with where games are going to be heard mid season. Either that, or I would have pulled the plug on KUBE at the start of the season. As for music formats, until they sold 102.9, iHeart has pretty consistently tried to drive a wedge between KNDD and KISW. I don't see why they couldn't try that with 93.3. As for the timing of the flip, remember that today is a holiday. My guess is we'll know sometime tomorrow.

I already kind of mentioned this in my post above, but that was also before it owned KZOK and Jack. I think they run the risk of cannibalizing one or more of those stations.

There are a lot of factors, including talent contracts and other obligations. This is the first season for the Kraken, so it's not as though there's an established history with KJAQ. I don't know about you, but I don't pay much attention to hockey until football season is over. That's where we are now.

How 'bout Funky Monkey @ 93.3? 😜

Not gonna happen and definitely shouldn't happen, but I had an affinity for that station 20+ years ago (found at 104.9 FM, of course).

If I remember correctly, ironically, it was KUBE's demotion to 104.9 that displaced 104.9's active/alternative hybrid format. By that point, I had long since stopped listening to the 104.9 web stream.

I expect this stunting is to keep going on all week. They may switch on Friday. I am really confused what they are going to switch to. I wouldn’t mind if they did go sports. I hope they don’t switch to Alt 93.3 or go Spanish. I don’t think they will go Hot AC to compete with KPLZ. Maybe they could possibly go Active Rock to compete with KISW and be a combo with KZOK.
Or maybe Beautiful Music, or Smooth Jazz! :ROFLMAO:

Most likely move remains simulcast with KJR-AM. Move the calls (KJR-FM) from 95.7 The JET and put different calls on 95.7.
Only reason to take a music lane is to create some sort of combo. An Alt/KZOK/JACK combo will attack the KISW/END combo.
A HOT-AC/HITS combo would attack the WARM/MOVIN combo. It is all about sales. There is a pattern around the nation to begin simulcasts of Sports and News/Talk AM stations on a bigger FM stick to bring in younger demos that just don't go to the AM. Latest I believe was in LA where they blew up the old AMP/KNOU 97.1 to simulcast KNX-AM. Fun to speculate, but no one on this board knows for sure. I-Heart has a tendency to do what they have done in the past when it comes to formats. Just because they did a format once, doesn't mean they won't try again.

Funky Monkey...(flashes back to high school days...good times!)...

When KUBE moved to 104.9 back in ‘16, it displaced The Brew, which had a more straight-forward active rock format (Funky Monkey was two formats prior; it was GenX in between).

Are there FCC implications for a straight simulcast of KJR sports programming on 950 and 93.3? IIRC the FCC only allowed AM simulcasts on 97.7 and 102.9 because those frequencies covered 50% or less of the Seattle market. Have the rules changed?

Andy Travis wrote an excellent post about the chances of KUBE going sports or AAA. I'd say sports format is a question of not nice to have on FM, but essential to have. News and talk and sports stations, unlike music, do have loyal listeners where music streaming services aren't an acceptable replacement. AM and HD Radio FM are inferior to plain old FM for these stations. Note that almost all the classic U.S. sports radio stations (WFAN, WEEI, WIP) long ago moved their primary frequency from AM to FM. If Sports Radio 950 does the same with 93.3, that would be completely unsurprising.

KUBE is in my car presets, so I have an opinion on the failings of their current format. A lot of 2020s CHR is hip-hop influenced, and KUBE playlists tended to mirror what was on Hits and Movin. They never went hard on underground or radical mixtape hip-hop because it wasn't and isn't public friendly or broadcast friendly. As noted here, KUBE recently started emphasizing throwbacks because the current music available to them just wasn't broadcast-worthy. They had a niche -- current hip-hop playable on FM -- but in 2020-22 that niche didn't find listeners or advertisers.

That's a good question, and the answer is yes:

In this Report and Order (Order), we eliminate section 73.3556 of the Commission’s
rules (the radio duplication rule) to reflect technological and marketplace changes over the past three
decades.

Here's some blasts from 93.3's past.....

Maybe that's what's missing; A guy called "Lonesome Bob".....

Hmmm...I might be reading into this too much, but it’s a theory as to what’s coming. (Plus, the timing with the palindrome date thing...)
