Has anyone had any experience with
this transmitter? Advantages/Disadvantages versus the Rangemaster?

Notoriously Bad Audio and Does not have the Range that the AM1000 Can acheive.

they are basically a TransAM 100 under another name.

You'd be better off asking Jack Gittings to build you one of his transmitters or get a Rangemaster
______________

Thanks for your input. I was actually looking at this one on ebay and wondering whether it would be a little better than the talking house II I have been playing around with for only a little more money. But apparently not - thanks to both of you for the input.

I agree about the AM-2000. It is still visible on the LPB web site, but is marked discontinued.
http://www.lpbinc.com/index_am2000.htm

It is the same as the original TransAM 100. Audio is TERRIBLE! Hence the discontinue status? I mean terrible! Don't pass over this point. The audio quality ie really bad. It might be OK for a traffic advisory or real estate use, but NOT for AM broadcasting! It sounds tinny and don't try feeding it with higher audio frequencies. It just breaks down with an overriding SSSSSSSS. It has a small series modulation transformer that limits audio response.

An interesting feature of this transmitter is the method of setting the power. You adjust the antenna coil until you read 6 on a scale of 10 on the meter. That corresponds to 100mW. But, that is not the absolute peak of the antenna coil. If you continue to peak the coil, the meter pegs and the real power goes up to 300mW. The power boost is a great feature, but the sucky audio quality negates the power capability. It may be ok for voice announcements.

Another thing I have found is that the range of this transmitter at 300mW is not nearly as good as the AMT3000 at 100mW with the base-loaded copper pipe antenna with identical height and ground connection. The reason is apparently due to the 102" whip antenna and the small, lossy antenna coil used in the AM-2000. Probably more due to the low efficiency coil in the AM-2000.

I may have hesitated to expose the facts about the AM-2000 (TramsAm 100) if it were still on the market, but now that it is dead I think the truth should come out.
