LPFM apply for translator

I'm sure they can as I know some hat have and are currently using them, i just can't think of any off the top of my head. I think an LPFM somewhere in the Upper Northeast has one.

The original intent was for LPFM's not to have translators, but there's nothing in the rules written against it.

The LPFM serves the Harbor Country of SW Michigan. It does it very well except for a very small portion of it's dominent signal that is obliterated by a station across the Lake Michigan. As you know, radio signals will bend slightly over large amounts of water. My guess is that a 10 watt or so translator would fill the gap well for the town. :)

A translator may rebroadcast the signal of a LPFM station. There are several LPFM stations around the country that enjoy this arrangement. As far as I know, it is untested if the FCC will actually let the LPFM licensee also own a translator. On the surface it would seem that it would be prohibited, but that could be subject to the interpretation of the wording of the rules. There are a couple of possible loopholes. A good communications lawyer might make it fly.

The usual arrangement is for a separate group to be formed to own the translator(s). These people are not voting members of the LPFM Board, but nothing says they can't be friends with the LPFM people.

Is it permissible for an LPFM station to apply for a translator station?
Yes. However, you will have to wait awhile, as you can not apply for one at this time, as there is no filing window open.
