LPFM on the air?

WCRX-LP 102.1 FM has been testing for the last couple of months. Now they are ready to start official programming/broadcasting pending FCC approval.

The Booster station on 98.3 FM is being build and I'm told by the engineer working on project that it will be finished by the FCC's March 26 deal line for construction.

Two of the other 102.1 LPFMs stations should be ready to go on the air sometime in April. The other one, Groveport/Madison H.S. station is not going to go on the air time soon and has another
18 months to do so.

Boy, talk about waiting until the last minute. Did anyone ever figure out how they were going to pick up WSLN in Marble Cliff?

A Miracle ? with 98.9 as the first adj to WSLN and only a few miles from the proposed transmitter site for 98.3 it should prove interesting to see how they will pick up WSLN!

WCRX-LP 102.1 FM is now ready to start broadcasting on a regular schedule as of today. They will be on the air from 11:00AM to 1:00PM M-F. This is their FCC grant authorizing them to start broadcasting today. Click here:

This translator is likely intended to rebroadcast the 102.1 LPFMs. However, there is a rub in the plans...Translators can only rebroadcast one licensee. Since this is a time share with 4 parties (even though three are sharing a common transmitter site) the translator will have to choose one and then go off the air when that station's time is up for the day, apply for a waiver to rebroadcast 4 different stations (since there are four different licensees), sign on and take their chances with the FCC, translate a different station altogether, or not go on the air at all. Knowing this translator has to pick up the signal "off the air" of a primary station, it will be interesting to see how this is done. Anyone know if the FCC has granted a waiver for a translator to rebroadcast multiple licensees? The only time I know of this hapenning is during E-Skip or Tropo openings.

I noticed elevatorish music sunday afternoon on 102.1 FM. I could hear it in my car all the way down 71 to near 11th ave. Did not hear any IDing.

Looking at the various licenses for 102.1 it seems like there will be periods of time when its off air completely. One time share is for 11a-1p M-F , while another seems to be for 3-8pm another from 8p-1a. Groveport is to have it from 6-9a but from a tx site in Groveport not the common site the other 3 are sharing.

Here is an update on the 98.3 FM translator. As far as I know, the translator will rebroadcast all three of the Columbus LPFM stations. As you can see from the emails below, the stations are going to be received off-air. 98.3 FM is now testing.

Artie,

Monday. I'm not sure what time. We tested Friday, but the receive antenna
is too close (15 ft) to the transmit antenna. When we turned on the
transmitter the FM receiver got completely overloaded with all kinds of RF
harmonics. In fact, for some odd reason we could hear Sunny 95 (94.7FM) on
our frequency of 98.3 even though our receive tuner was tuned to 102.1FM.

We're moving the receive yagi to the back of the property 200' from the
transmit antenna so that should solve the problem.

Artie,

We had a successful test this afternoon. We moved the receive antenna 100'
away. 98.3 is broadcasting carrier until about 6:00pm if you want to try
picking it up now.

This is technically illegal. Has the FCC granted a waiver to allow this? Also, what is up with the application being filed in the name of the former owner of the translator? The FCC granted the transfer application back in January. xmusicmatt asked the same question.

Addendum: The ownership change has not been "consumated", meaning the FCC has not been notified of the completion, so the application for license is in the old owners's name. The FCC may allow this application for license to go forward without the waiver, due to the nature of the timeshare of the frequency. It will be interesting to see if this sets any precident for other time shares.
