LPFM stations

observed that the local LPFM stations that used to occupy 945 and 929 have been dark for the last few months. Does Sandi still sand bag this bulletin board? Any future plans to be on the air? Some issues with Saga up in Bellingham, from being co-located frequency wise with KISM were mentioned months ago, but other than that, no new news.

Any other frequencies available in the area for this type of service?

Was it Evening Magazine or Pacific NW Magazine that did a piece awhile back on LPFM in the area?? Old age means one can't even remember the fricking MEDIUM much less the journalist...

But it was profiling how places like Vashon Island that wanted LPFM so, among other things, they would have communications capabilities to direct residents what to do in case of transportation emergencies ... and how they could not get a license; but how the WitWot church of Tupelo, Idaho (or whatever it is) seems to be cleaning house on every available LPFM opportunity.

I just remember that the whole thing kind of flew in the face of what I understood LPFM to be all about. A way to reach people in the immediate geographic area ... not as a means of trying to get listed in the bottom of the stack in the Arbitron quarterlies. But I too noticed 94.5 seems to have dropped the KYA oldies thing -- ironic given the parallel discussion here about possible loss of the COMMERCIAL oldies stn. But at the same time, it's kind of an example of LPFM going after a market MUSIC niche and not a geographic one.

Are they still on the air at 104.5 in Fall City, as the "originating" station, or has that also been off the air? As I started writing, I thought about the other thread speculating the future of KBSG, and how these stations may fill the programming "void" if they do decide to flip.

Hi gang. The morning voice of SuperCFL and RadioKYA here. Our little radio operation has moved about 100 miles SW to Ocean Shores and Aberdeen. Seems a certain "other" 104.5 will be be covering the Puget Sound basin pretty soon, and we were set to be obliterated. No legal protection for lowly ol' LPFM!

SO, given the extremely limited earning capability of LPFM (none, basically) it's off the greener patures...we certainly don't have the war chest to fight CC or 1st Broadcorping Castration or whatever.

You can hear radio KYA, a bit of an interesting morphed oldies format ("The Sweetest Music Ever Made") on 89.5 in Ocean Shores, 94.3 Aberdeen/ Hoquiam, and 92.9 Olympia. Also streaming at www.radiokya.com . You can hear uptempo "Hound Dog Rock n Roll" on the new SuperCFL, 94.7 Ocean Shores and on the web at www.cflfm.com .

We're still working for nothing...just doing shows every day for the love of radio. Funny thing is, now that we are out of the Seattle media glare, we have a lot more listeners. Sort of a bigger fish in a much smaller pond. We have some local underwriting to basically cover the general costs, and lots of emails giving us positive feedback. We cover whatever is happening in the OS and the software mixes the tunes.

Stay tuned for future expansion plans...taking over the world, 100 watts at a time!

I do not speak for the good Dr.; for all I know she does occasionally lurk here, but under what name I do not know. The translators in Seattle are still in existence, but ya gotta have something to translate! SO, fo' now, you'll hear nada from 94.5, 92.9, or...(or others?!?) in Seattle. Unless it's a pirate, yarghhh.

XOXO

So Chico, they're just sittin' there, like the proverbial cherry ready to be picked. You have all the FCC riggeramo out of the way. You folks should start a community radio station, class, open mic, or something of the sort. User access supported. There's tons of talented individuals in Puget land jumpin' up and down, who could be on the air right now. Help them stay fresh, and the big guys can use your outfit to recruit. Does that sound dumb?

Well, my new friend Ty, you have the right idea in principle. But it ain't so simple. The translators by law have to translate something. You do not originate programming from there. You have to be able to pick up the "original" signal at your translator and then re-broadcast it. It was a devil of a tricky problem for Dr. Sandi to get the original Fall City 104.5 signal at Channel 11's tower in Seattle to re-transmit at 94.5, withoug ALSO getting KMIH from Mercer Island and accidentally re-transmitting that instead.

Simple physics and federal law make it very dificult to squeeze original programming into Seattle. We were allowed the LPFM in Fall City at 104.5, but it was an unprotected 100 watt signal. For that matter, the kids at KMIH 104.5 in Mercer Island were unprotected as well, but for the fact that there is no place more politically connected than Mercer Island in all of the NW...so much so that Maria Cantwell got personally involved. Not too tough to find a good lawyer on "the Rock." In any case, yes...there are translator frequencies that Sandi was able to find in Seattle, but you can't just hook up a transmitter and go. Unless, apparently, you are a religious broadcaster in Idaho or the Caroilinas, then I guess it's OK to translate from humdreds or thousands of miles...dunno how they are doing this, but it certainly doesn't SEEM legal. You have to be able to get a legal signal to Seattle from somewhere...tough to do. The physical "hole" for an LPFM or other source has to exist close enough to Seattle to be able to pick up and re-transmit, and those holes are long long gone.

There is sdome movement afoot for original transmissions from legal translators, but again there is still the issue of protection. Just ask the guys at KPLU, who will probably see there long held 88.1 w Seattle translator go kablooey because some religious wingnut station in Ocean Park is moving towards Shelton.

Easy solution, my friend Indigo Coyote or Chico...

Let's start a religion, call it "Radiology"

"The belief that thou shalt have privilage to serve thine community as intended by the almighty FCC."

Hell, we could even get some big names for support... Does the name Thom Croose ring a bell? Subliminal buddy, subliminal....

Think about it...
