LPTV "Big 3" Network Affiliates?

I thought about this while looking at the CBS national affiliate list:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/07/31/utility/main517034.shtml

CBS has three LPTVers (and/or Class A's) as affiliates, as far as I can tell:

WCAV/19 Charlottesville VA
WSHM/67 ("CBS 3") Springfield MA
KPSP/38 ("CBS 2") Cathedral City CA (Palm Springs)

All three are new additions to the network's affiliate list...all having signed on within the past 5 years. WSHM is an off-shoot of the Hartford CT CBS affiliate, and WCAV is the sister of new ABC and FOX LPTVers in that market.

What other "big 3" network LPTV affiliates are there, besides those three (and WCAV's ABC sister station)? FOX doesn't count here, because it has quite a few of them and is a newer network.

The only other one I can think of offhand is WBND/57 in the South Bend market, which is that market's ABC affiliate.

I think (not sure) Binghamton, N. Y. NBC affilate is a low power on channel 8. It's there mostly just to feed cable.

WCAV is a full-powered station (2380 kW ERP).

> WSHM/67 ("CBS 3") Springfield MA
> KPSP/38 ("CBS 2") Cathedral City CA (Palm Springs)

All the Palm Springs stations other than NBC (KMIR/36) and ABC (KESQ/42) are LPTVs or Class-As.

WLMO-LP/65 Lima OH is a CBS affiliate.
KATH-LP/5 Juneau AK is an NBC affiliate.
KSCT-LP/5 Sitka AK is an NBC affiliate.

Back in the mid '90s, K02MT/2 Parker AZ was listed in Broadcasting Yearbook as an LPTV ABC affiliate but I don't know if they still are.

WBHG-CA is on Channel 20 and is a sister-station to WIVT/34, both owned by Clear Channel. According to W9WI.com, they are a satellite of WETM/18 Elmira, also owned by Clear Channel, but their website doesn't indicate this.

I think they moved from Channel 8 to 20 a couple of years ago to make way for WICZ-DT.

In Alaska, there's also CBS affil K13XD in Fairbanks (branded on-air as "KXD").

And I think Puerto Rico and the Virgin islands also have some English LP affiliates as well.

WILM/10 Wilmington, NC is low-power and carries both CBS and

Technically speaking, Wilmington is only short-spaced to Columbia by a less than 10 miles. Realistically, a directional channel 10 could have gone there at full power (though not anymore with WNCT-DT in Greenville on 10).

Actually, when the 1996 digital allocations were announced (this list was recalled), WWAY-DT in Wilmington was slated to be on channel 10.

Also, WILM-LP no longer carries UPN. WSFX-26 is now Fox/UPN.

WCAV/19 is technically a full powered station, but covers a very small geographic area. It broadcasts at 1000kW, not 2380. Those figures are from a previous CP, held by the first licenscee of channel 19. WCAV is very directional and sends all of its power into the Blue Ridge Mountains. For all purposes, it covers only the city of Charlottesville and part of Albemarle County. Gray Television, which owns and operates WCAV, also has two LPTVs in Charlottesville: WVAW/16/ABC and WAHU/27/Fox, which serve comparable areas to WCAV. WVIR-TV/29/NBC, the other commercial TV channel in Charlottesville, is 5000kW (non directional) and is considered the most powerful TV station in VA. How Gray thinks they can compete with that, I don't know.

Actually, the FCC site shows them limiting power toward the mountains, but their lower power definitely shows. It's much easier for me to receive WVIR than WCAV (though both are receivable 24/7 for me). WVAW-LP is even harder and I've never managed to receive WHTJ.

Charlottesville's TV lineup looks something like this actually...

16 ABC WVAW-LP 150 kW DA
19 CBS WCAV-TV 1000 kW DA
27 FOX WAHU-CA 50 kW DA
29 NBC WVIR-TV 5000 kW
41 PBS WHTJ-TV 141 kW DA (not a typo)
50 PBS W50CM 36.6 kW DA

USVI has WVGN-LP/14, an NBC affiliate.

Puerto Rico has WPRU-LP/20, an ABC affiliate.

Both of these stations carry local news from New York City (WNBC and WABC, respectively).

KXTS-LP/41 in Victoria is an NBC affiliate, one of many LPTVs operated out of full power KAVU.

Not sure if you can count this one, but WBMA-LP/58 is the 'main' ABC affiliate for the Birmingham market, serviced by full power satellites WCFT/Tuscaloosa and WJSU/Anniston.

And there's K30AA, part of the KOAA-TV Colorado Springs/Pueblo "5/30" branding for years.

Both of those stations are owned by the same concern, who also have the CBS affiliate, WVXF/17 in Charlotte Amalie, VI, and a LP WB/UPN affiliate in
Puerto Rico. (Is there much audience for English language stations in PR?)

I found one more in one of the territories...

KUAM-LP/20, an NBC/WB affiliate in Tamuning, Guam. (KUAM-TV is the CBS affiliate in Guam.)

Weren't they the other way around at one point? Around 2003, KUAM-TV ch.8 was NBC and KUAM-LP ch.20 (cable 11) was CBS, with WB being on the ABC affiliate (which was also low-powered, I think).

WBGH-CA (NBC) is on channel 20. Channel 8 of Binghamton is reserved for WICZ-DT (FOX).

Even though they're licensed as an LPTV, they would count as a translator unless they originate their own news or ads.

KPSN-LP/22 Payson AZ is another one (NBC), but they're a translator of KPNX Phoenix. Until a few years ago, they were a translator of indie KUSK (now KAZT) Payson. They've never originated their own programming AFAIK, despite being licensed as an LPTV.

There are probably other LPTVs that are strictly used as translators. but I don't think listing those was the intention of the originator of this thread.

I don't know if they're even broadcasting at all. I've never been able to pull them in.

KLSB-LP/53 (www.nbc53.com) in Nacogdoches, TX is basically just a mouthpiece for KETK/56 to cover the southern half of east Texas. Don't know if this station will still be around when/if KETK were to ever really move sticks to the KYTX/19 one SE of Jacksonville.

Actually they have seperate programming, as KAVU is an ABC affiliate.

KAVU, aside from controlling local Fox affiliate KVCT, owns the following:

KMOL-LP/17 (NBC) "NBC 41"
KUNU-LP/21 (Univision) "Univision 21"
KXTS-LP/41 (NBC) "NBC 41"
KVTX-LP/45 (Telemundo) "Telemundo 45"

Interesting, but then, I know practically nothing about
the engineering aspects of the business. I've always been
confused about UPN in Wilmington. Before the Eastern North
Carolina edition of TV Guide began listing WILM (and back
when TV Guide still had channel charts), TV Guide used to
put something to this effect: "Although not listed in this
edition, WILM Ch. 10 in Wilmington, NC, carries both CBS and
UPN programming," and the station did run some UPN shows in
the 4-6 PM time slot, IIRC. But the same edition also showed
WSFX as (Fox, UPN), although I never saw a UPN show listed on
Channel 26. So when did WILM drop UPN?

According to KUAM's website, KUAM-TV/8 is still an NBC station, while KUAM-LP/20 is CBS.
______________

I'm not entirely sure. At one time, I think then-WSSN-LP was UPN-only from what I recall.

I know that Summer 04 WSFX had UPN, as Enterprise was on it.
