LPTV sale in Houston

If you've wondered what an LPTV with a marginal signal is worth in Houston, the answer is $850,000.

That is what KUGB has just sold for.

The Uniglobe website is still there. Any idea on new programming? This incarnation sure didn't last long, if a change is coming.

No, no idea if there'll be a change in programming. The sale has just been submitted to the FCC for approval. I wouldn't expect any change before summer, unless the sale closes fairly quickly (which must wait until the FCC gives its OK).

New owners can always LMA the station immediately.

This is true.

They have such a lousy signal where I am that I can't even tell if they're on the air unless I get my portable set and drive to within a few miles of the tower.

Can't receive it here either, and I usually have no problem with the LPs. All but KUGB, KZHO, and KDHU come in quite easily here.

So you get 34.2 and if so where?

I can't get it in Clear Lake but it comes in at my parents house in Jersey Village but the signal has been getting worse as the weeks go on. I tuned it in two months ago at 68% and now it barely reaches 60%. This is on one of those amplified Phillips antennas sold at all Walmarts for like $40 with model# SDV6122.

And what is KHDU?

Thanks

I am in Westchase and get all the stations except KUGB and KBPX.

$40 is too much for that antenna. You can get it for $25 or less online - even paying shipping you'll still save $$.

BTW, amplified antennas usually don't help unless you're splitting the signal or have a long (>25') cable between the antenna and the TV. If the amplifier is cheap (which it probably is given the antenna price) it may actually make things worse!

Yea, it's split between two rooms thru the Dish Network DVR off air tv module.

Don't know anything about the Dish Network module, but in general, if the signal's split an amp can help.

The idea is to boost the signal/noise ratio at the receiver. Without an amp, the signal gets about 3-4 dB weaker when split, but the receiver's noise remains constant, so the S/N ratio drops by 3-4 dB.

An amp will inject its own noise (and amplify it), but the receiver's noise becomes much smaller in comparison. The amp basically "freezes" the S/N ratio at a level which depends on the incoming signal strength and the quality of the amp, and makes everything downstream much less significant.

Two common ways of keeping the S/N ratio down when splitting a signal are:
  • amplifying the signal at the antenna (as in your case), or
  • using an amplified splitter, which amplifies the signal then splits it.

The big thing to avoid is doing both. That could over-amplify signals and make things worse by overloading the receivers and causing distortion. If you turn an amp off and your signal quality improves, that could be the situation.

Yes, it comes through very well here at about 70%. I live near Stella Link @ Braeswood (not really sure what to call this area, lol), and have a Terk HDTVA pointed toward Missouri City.
