LSU Radio Network automation problems

Hey all -

I operate WYAB 103.9 FM, and we are an affiliate of LSU athetlics in Jackson, Mississippi.

WYAB has been an affiliate since 2008, and we have never had a single game go off without a hitch when it is automated. On a regular basis, tone and relay closures are fired off randomly and then not at all when they are supposed to. Even when I listen to WWL, they seem to have issues like ours.

Has anyone else had these problems?

Does it originate from WWL? Maybe they ran the game incorrectly.

Are they using digital relay's or tones? If tones, maybe your decoder is flaking out.

I think LSU originates from Westwood One these days. Could be your ACU getting tones from other sources off that satellite.

We are picking up the relay closures directly from WW1 - the tones that the LSU folks send are not filtered and the 25 Hz and 35 Hz cues (went they are sent) are just jumbled in with the rest of the audio. It sometimes causes legal ids and commercials to fire off right in the middle of a sports play or pre-recorded interview. The relay closures from WW1 are not much better, and are almost certainly linked back to the tones somehow. One afternoon I called (almost) all of the other LSU football affiliates and they all had problems as well. One well respected late engineer in Shreveport said that they just don't seem to care about it. As I said in my original post - even WWL 870 AM has clear issues decoding the tones, just as we do.

I really was wanting to know if other stations have attempted to contact LSU about this problem or if anyone out there wants to jointly approach the network about it with me.

I tried automating it here a couple of years ago and had the same problems so I have a part-timer sit and start the spots and I.D.'s manually now, it's a shame, but that's the only way I can keep my station from sounding like crap during an LSU game.

Would you (and any other LSU affiliates with these problems) be interested in writing a joint letter of appeal to the LSU syndicator about this? Whenever I call them directly, they say no one else is having problems, but I've yet to talk to any other affiliate that can automate these games.

Thanks!
