Lt. Columbo - Peter Falk Dies

He was also great in the original "In-Laws". Hysterical movie that hasn't aged in 32 years.

How about the role in "It's A Mad Mad Mad World" where he played a cab driver.

I was about 15 years old when I got to meet him on plane flying home from California to NJ. My sister and I had been visiting our grandfather for Christmas and New Years. Moments before our flight left the gate for the trip home, a guy came down the aisle and flopped into a seat a few rows behind us on the opposite side of the aisle. Moments later you could hear the murmurs and whispers from the other passengers as they recognized Peter Falk. This would have been about 1979 so he was a really big star at the time.

My sister desperately wanted his autograph but she was too chicken to ask him herself (even though she is 3 years older than me) so she kept bugging me to go talk to him. Finally after about an hour I got up the nerve. As I approached his seat I could see he was drawing on a sketch pad (he was very good). I apologized for bothering him but explained how my sister and I were big fans and asked if he wouldn't mind signing an autograph for her. He asked me if my sister wanted to pose for a picture, which she was very excited to do. As she was kneeling in the aisle next to him to have her picture taken, Peter Falk leaned over and gave her a big kiss on the cheek just as I snapped the picture. The look of surprise on my sisters' face was priceless!

It turns out that Mr. Falk had been flying back to NJ to visit his father who at the time was ill. It was a last minute flight (which is probably why he was way back in coach with the rest of us) and obviously he had a lot of things on his mind at the time...but he couldn't have been any nicer or more pleasant.

Rest in peace, Mr. Falk.

Wonderful story!

Enjoyed his performance as the loving grandfather/narrator in "The Princess Bride".

I like how he originally passed on the role...until he learned that he would be paired with Eddie "Rochester" Anderson. Falk, who loved The Jack Benny Program, couldn't say no to that opportunity! ;)

An excellent actor and a good man who will be missed. What's less known is that Peter Falk starred in a number of independent films directed and written by his friend John Casssavetes. They included Machine Gun McCain (1969), Husbands (1970, Mikey & Nicky (1976), Opening Night (1977) and A Woman Under the Influence (1974).

Cassavetes returned the favor by guest starring in an episode of Columbo in 1972 as the murderer Columbo has to catch
