LTJ BEATS STAR

In the November PPMs Q92.9 edged slightly ahead of Star in the 6+ numbers. Star's cume is still higher, so maybe some playlist tweaking is in order at Star.

WSHH is #2, and might beat DVE with Christmas music (didn't 3WS do that last year?).

Now that baseball has rolled completely out of 104.7 's averages, KDKA-AM is beating them pretty solidly 6+ and is back to #3 overall.

The Fan continues to grow. I'm done offering opinions on the product, because now that they have numbers they will figure this is good enough. With football and all the scandals this fall, they will have plenty of momentum into baseball in the spring.

Y108 has been in a tailspin for the last quarter.

WAMO also faded badly last month, losing almost 1/3 of their AQH share. Cume is not down as far. I only listen to them for a few minutes here and there and what I've noticed is that I seem to hear more CHR hits that would also be heard on Kiss.... they might be trying to mainstream the music and it's backfiring, with the hip-hop crowd tuning out. They have a different (better) female jock on middays, and I still never hear any spots. Have to wonder if they will make it to their first anniversary.

This is not surprising. WLTJ is fun to listen to lately. Star is not. They seem to excel at picking out the most overplayed top 40 of today and mixing it with the lamest top 40 of yesterday.

I agree with your assessment of what's happening w/ WAMO. They are watering it down already and what they need to do is go in the opposite direction. People on their facebook page are constantly asking for Sunday night oldies. If you take on a heritage name you also need to take on the heritage or you'll just succeed in pissing a lot of people off.

But with trainwreck demos, of course.

Yes, I beleive that did happen. However looks like WSHH is doing that this year and with great success. They were the dominant and better Christmas station with more people staying with them once they went Christmas music a few days before 3ws.

I agree. What's going on with the new "WAMO 100" lately? Yesterday, I visited their website, and I noticed they dropped the "R&B" from the "Hip-Hop" and replaced it with "Hottest hits". I am beginning to sense that they are shifting away from (the REAL) R&B, and being more rhythmic/crossover and lesser "slow jams". This is not the WAMO I used to know at all. Also, during my visit, the message said that they are trying to embrace the changes in the music and recording industry. And now I'm at a loss as to what I'll hear next. But, if you are going to use heritage call letters such as WAMO at all, you should really act like it.

WAMO is probably trying to become a station that shares cume with 100.7, right next door to them. 100.7 on the other hand could go a number of directions... (how about Scott Paulsen in the morning?)

The problem WAMO will have doing any other format is that they sound sort of medium-market compared to everyone around them. That's not an issue when you're the only Urban in town, but when you're taking on a big owner head-on, the difference will be apparent.

Honestly? I know this varies depending on where you are and time of day, but we already have great oldies stations in WJPA and WKHB. I don't see another station doing it better as far as music mix is concerned - those stations just need to be more widely heard.

What we are really lacking is a station that plays classic alternative rock - from Television on through to Soundgarden. WYEP used to fill this niche somewhat, but they are sucking balls lately. WKVE hasn't gone this route except for the occasional Elvis Costello and I don't really want them to.

But that's the point -- those stations can't be more widely heard. That's why there might be an opening.

If you find a station that's successfully programming that format anywhere let me know.

Pittsburgh is a great oldies town and has produced many stars. Pittsburgh had great stations too. I think that 3WS sucks and if CBS tried real personality radio like WCBS in Pittsburgh, it would be a good choice

Excellent point! I've always wondered why CBS didn't model more of their stations after CBS-FM in New York or K-Earth 101 in Boss Angeles. They seem to have a one-size-fits-all format for sports talk and all-news. The nice thing is that I can listen to those when I'm working around the house on my laptop or on my phone if I'm in the car.

Speaking as an employee, I thank you for the compliment, but WKHB (620/94.1) only plays oldies after 7:15 PM
(and for about 90 minutes in the morning).

My favorite oldies station in the area is WKFB's FM translator at 97.5, which starts running its automated oldies
at 5 PM.

I know that. But judging by what's happened with WAMO, I just see a similar thing happening (i.e. trying to have a KHB-sort of playlist, it doesn't immediately blow everyone away, management gets nervous, and zap, we have another station where we're hearing freakin' Piano Man 7 times a day). I'd rather a station not even try if they're not going to give it a real chance.

Parttimer - yes, I know, that's a pipe dream. But most places do have a AAA that fills that bill to a point. Ours has been going downhill on it lately.

Actually I've been convinced for a long time that Pittsburgh would support a well-done commercial AAA, and I think DVE knows it too. I would envision some of the artists you mentioned, along with new releases from the Sprigsteens, Pettys and U2's of the world.
