KFMP 87.7 FM IN LUBBOCK, TEXAS BEGINS COMMERCIAL-FREE COUNTRY CHRISTMAS FORMAT

KFMP 87.7 FM in Lubbock, Texas, is celebrating an all Country Christmas. Starting today and through the holiday season, KFMP will be broadcasting Country Christmas music.

"Lubbock is a major hub of the Texas Country music. Many radio stations nationwide play Christmas music during the holidays, but our gift to Lubbock is turning 87.7 into the first and only Country Christmas station," said Larry Rogow of Venture Technologies Group (VTG), the parent company of KFMP 87.7 FM.

KFMP 87.7 FM is playing an eclectic mix of Christmas songs by country music artists, including music by George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Reba McEntire, Gene Autry, Garth Brooks, Dwight Yokum, Willie Nelson, Tammy Wynette, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Barbara Mandrell, Randy Travis, Toby Keith, Lee Ann Womack, and Hank Williams, Jr. KFMP 87.7 FM's Country Christmas format will be 24/7 and will operate commercial-free with limited local sponsorships. "It is an ideal music service for retailers in Lubbock to use in their stores as we head into the Christmas season," said Mr. Rogow.

KFMP 87.7 FM had been broadcasting an alternative music format since January 2009, after KTXT-FM went off the air. The Country Christmas format will not be permanent. KFMP 87.7 FM will begin again with a new format in 2010.

KFMP is a low power television station broadcasting on channel 6. The audio from TV channel 6 can be heard on most FM radios at 87.7 MHz. For further information contact Larry Rogow at 323-904-4090 or [email protected].

I'm sure ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, and many other copyright holders would be thrilled to learn of this "use".

I'm also curious as to why they gave up Alternative, and curious what their new 2010 format might be.

Also noteworthy is a petition (filed by NPR no less!) to the FCC that seeks to repeal section 73.525. If successful, such a repeal would do away with ALL protections to TV CH6 by NCE stations, regardless of whether they were LPTV, analog or digital. That would be the nail in the coffin for LPTV being used as an FM methinks. I understand the FCC has ended the requirement to protect prior analog TV6 stations that went digital, and there's no current requirement to protect digital TV stations on CH6. It's just a matter of time before the remainder of the LPTVs are either forced to go digital or off-air.

The Public Notice can be found here:

It will be interesting to see how long KFMP will last operating as a "Franken FM" in 2010...

Neato!
Although, I would have campaigned for an all Hanukkah and Israeli tunes format (for all of Lubbock's Jew), but like Mick Jagger said, you can't always get what you want....
