I am doing a story about Spanish language radio in Lubbock for Texas Tech. One question I am having trouble with... before Magic and Power 106, did we have a Spanish language radio station?

I recall 1420 was Spanish back in the 70's. And there was a Spanish language FM (I think the call was KWGO) on 99.5 in the late 70's. Around 1978 or '79 it went dark for about 18 months, eventually resurfacing as CHR KRLB.

There was also a Spanish language TV station in Lubbock, KMXN on Channel 34, which launched in 1967 or '68. Not sure how long it lasted, but 34 was dark for a number of years before KJAA (now KJTV) launched in 1981.

Much of the 80's there was KTLK 1460. Magic was born on the AM, at 950 as Q95. The weekend before the flip in '87, LaBamba was looped over and over and over. Call Ben Gonzales at Power...he could help you out with your story. He's been doing Countdown USA for centuries....kidding Ben.

There was a Spanish FM on 101.1 in the 70's - to the sorrow of all of us who wanted to DX WRR. The engineering there was horrible! Overmodulated to a ridiculous extent, and occasionally throwing images all up and down the FM dial. We heard that they left their transmission line open and it filled up with dust - but I never could corroborate that story.

I think the issue is more about Spanish FM's in the 70s, not about DXing. And of course, in the 70s, I think FM was still very new.

Probably the first Spanish radio in Lubbock was KCLR AM 1530 Ralls. I notice it is now religious, but I think that is fairly recent. It was owned by a Mr. Rodriguez for many years and I believe it was pretty consistantly part or all Spanish. It was a 5 kw daytimer for years then added night time service at 1 kw.

You should speak to Marcelo Tafoya in Austin, he was partner with Drew Ballard when KLFB was on the air doing a Spanish language format. Marcelo Tafoya is a part of the Tejano Music Coalition and was the former GM of KOOP in Austin. I think his number is listed in the Austin telephone directory.

I know that KTUE in Tulia offered Spanish programming from 6:00 pm til Sunset in the mid 1970s. I worked there in the summer of 76 and 77. I don't recall any other Spanish programming in the South Plains that early.I grew up in San Angelo, where there was always a Spanish station... KSJT, which started at 97.5 sometime around 1971-72
