Lubbock Station KRBL Bankrupt - To Be Sold

This was passed on to me by my radio friends.

http://news.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/headline_id=b13501

KRBL will be sold by a receiver. Any predictions who, if anyone, will buy it? What format should it be? Clearly not a Hispanic format. That's what they had on there and it failed.

A few years ago with Paul Beane they did a decent rating, if I remember right. Not only the signal sounds bad, but the quality of what's being put on air right now sounds like a low res computer speaker. Not sure if the Hispanic Christian format on there will stay.

Their tower site is about a mile West of Lorenzo and the antenna pattern is best to the SE. Only a small snippet of signal actually covers East Lubbock, and then only if the wind is right. They had to protect one of Beane's stations in Levelland at 105.3 which explains the crummy pattern.

Once Beane got involved, they simulcast the KRBL signal on the Levelland station and managed to cover Lubbock rather well.

The station had a very interesting start and the original owner was mainly using the station as a tax write-off. It wasn't until Beane came along that the station actually began to thrive and turn a profit.

There was some threads a while back that discussed how long the Bros. Benavides would last with it. Not sure who won the bet.

this station is a Turd in the lubbock radio bowl, and i don't know who would want it. unless it can cover more of lubbock county, i don't know what good it could be to anyone. ::)

Well that would at least be a welcome format change to a station that hasn't really been relevant in several years. I looked up Dave and Jimmy. It's a CHR show from best I can tell. Strange choice for an alternative station.

The Benavides guys own other stations, right? Or was this their only one?

Albert is shown as owner of KAMZ Tahoka. Nothing found for Ricky.

This is interesting. Didn't 98.1 in Abilene go alternative to compete against 107.9 for awhile?

This situation seems very similar with this station perhaps trying to go against 94.5.

Hope it works out better for this station than it did for 98.1. Sadly, I think the signal will be a huge disadvantage to this station.

As someone that grew up listening to 102.1 The Edge in DFW, i'll definitely be giving this station a try despite the poor signal.

I agree that Dave and Jimmy is a strange choice for the station. Judging from their website, it looks very CHRish and not a good fit for an alternative station. Looks like all their affiliates are CHR as well.

But on the plus side: at least it is something different. I might scream if we get another religious or country station out here.

Anyone know when they plan on launching the new format?

Says on the website now that it's launching in March. As for when in March, I have no clue.

Turned on the station on my way home from work.

While I do not speak Spanish...I think I heard some DJs talking and I think they said they are shutting it down at 6 (in about 30 min from the time I made this post)

105.7 - Now Stunting

Update: Station now appears to be stunting with Beatles music.

Still sounds terrible but I'm guessing (or at least hoping) that they have plans to fix the sound problems the station has had for awhile now.

I saw the Facebook page for Radio Alabanzas 105.7 and based on the pictures of their studios it doesn't look like they have much gear at all. It's about as basic a setup as you can get. I'm going to guess the station doesn't have high end processing gear (which could be the reason behind the crummy audio). I would be willing to bet the antenna and transmitter aren't that great either. There really shouldn't be a reason to label this station a "turd" (as previously posted on here) if it was built correctly. Half of it's 60dBu signal covers half of Lubbock. It should technically sound pretty good in the market. Based on what I have seen just from their studios, they probably don't have the best antenna or transmitter or they didn't build the station properly. Somethings must be lacking somewhere. Hopefully the new owner will invest a little and put in some new better equipment.
