Lubbock TV alert- Did anyone notice?

Did anyone notice that KCBD TV has changed their bug?
Instead of the red and white 11, their bug which runs during news and over the news ticker now says KCBD 11.

The KCBD letters are of a new font and logo never used before.
The station has been "NewsChannel 11" since at least the late 90s.

Their weather bug also now has the KCBD treatment.
Anyone know what this is about? Is the station re-branding as KCBD 11?

What's going on here?

Wait, that big?

They aren't changing networks or something, are they?
You can at least tell us that... Can you?

Wow, you probably have a lot of new VO's to cut for this one, huh?

Lots of TV stations are rebranding to their call letters because of digital TV. They are no longer broadcasting on their old analog channel and they also have different cable channel numbers for analog & HD cable. So to future-proof your brand in the market it's probably best to get an identifier that doesn't mention a specific channel number or a specific network affiliation.

Yes, I know that, nothing new. The thing is, Lubbock really is not a big cable market. It is not hard to get off air broadcasts here. On the other hand, I did notice a fine print on one of 11's promos that said "Suddenlink Channel 3" (Suddenlink is the cable provider for the Lubbock Metro). This is a new development, because the 11, 13, 28 and 34 used to be bunched up between channels 7 and 10.

Still, I don't see the reason for 11 to rebrand. 11 (until the Leno/Conan flip) had the highest rated local lineup, including news. So spending the millions to rebrand does not make sense to me. Rule 1 of TV, the only thing constant is change. But rule 2 is, if it ain't broke, don't fix. Or so I thought.

Raycom, what the he|| are you doing?

Just an update:
Its KCBD 11 now, with a revised 11 logo, which looks the same, but now is on top of a red circle instead of a red box. Everything else is exactly the same.

I understand it was called KCBD 11 for many years.
So we now have KCBD 11
KLBK
and
KAMC

CW is now CW 22/4

And that's pretty much it from the "who cares" blog...

Much ado about nothing really....its KCBD NEWSCHANNEL 11. They got diary reviews back that people were referencing them as 'NEWSCHANNEL 11 KLBK', so the call sign was drawn in to recognize KCBD. Thats all.

The diary people should be trained in call letters and channels for their local stations.

Makes sense.
Now, if only KCBD could get the character graphics to line up.
The fonts are slanted, but the logo is straight.
It's visually distracting. Call it a nitpick, but it will turn off viewers.

Garrett, can you get KERA-Dallas there? My daughter went to TTU, and I saw in the hotel. Maybe it was from cable.
---I know-- off topic ::)

Sorry, nope.
The only stations I can get in Lubbock are from Lubbock. I can not even get stations from Amarillo or Midland. I only got a station from Abeline once, but that's about it.

Not sure about Lubbock, but back in the 70s/80s, KERA was the PBS station available on Cable as far away as Amarillo - I'm guessing the microwave link probably went through Lubbock, so it may have been on cable there at some point (though KTXT started on-air in 1962). Once Channel 2 (KACV) started in 88, I'm betting the link was dropped.

I know KERA has been the de facto PBS station on cable in Abilene, San Angelo, Amarillo, Wichita Falls, Tyler/Longview and Texarkana at various points (not sure if it was on in Midland/Odessa before KOCV/KPBT began airing in 86).

KERA still is the PBS station for Abilene, Wichita Falls, Sherman-Denison and the Tyler/Longview/Nacogdoches portion of the Tyler-Longview (lufkin/nacogdoches) market. (Lufkin gets KUHT.)

I remember WAY BACK when, when cable first came to Lubbock and you could get Channel 28, which was KSEL before they changed it to KAMC and they had ABC programming. We could also get WFAA Channel 8 ABC programming as well.

KTVT Channel 11 was independent and as a kid we'd watch Slam Bang Theatre.

Cable was awesome back then.

Did your cable in Lubbock black-out WFAA during net programming?

In Sherman-Denison, we'd lose KDFW or KXAS, depending on which network KXII was running at the moment.

In Tyler, the cable system would substitute KLTV's signal in place of WFAA during ABC programming, but KTBS's bad signal remained.

WFAA is not available on Lubbock cable and has not been since I came here in 1998. KAMC is still ABC and has been from the begining. Channel 11 in Lubbock has always bee KCBD and has always been NBC. I understand that they used the same logo as KTVT way back in the early days. You can see that logo here: http://www.mcsittel.com/logos/kcbd1170.jpg
