Lubbock's battle of the Hits heats up...

Overheard this morning on 102.5:
"Why settle for 15 in for "15 in a row" and "15 minutes of commercial free hits."

Seems like the war has begun...

I have to say so far I like 102.5 better.

Although both are doing a great job of butchering that Enrique Iglesias song by playing it every 30 minutes.

Another observation: Is it just me, or has 102.5 started "speeding up" their music a little bit like Mix does???

I know many CHR stations do this, including KHKS in Dallas. Mix has done it for a long time, but not KZII....until now.

Do they do this so they can squeeze in a few more ads each hour?

I too noticed that both stations are pitching the music at the same 2% level. On one occasion they played the same song, so I switched back between the two and it was exactly the same pitch. But I have to disagree with you, as I believe it is 102.5 that has always pitched the music, while Mix did not until making the flip 2 weeks ago. The reason for pitching music is to distinguish the format from AC and to make the music sound faster, more alive. This has been done since the 1960's.

As far as sound is concerned, my observations have been as thus:
102.5 is heavily compressed, but lower volume than 100.3. But 102.5 sounds flat to me.
100.3 sounds crisp, and louder, but lacks some compression. Mix 100's microphones are HORRIBLE, in my opinion, completly mixed wrong (but that's just my personal opinion, engineers may disagree). 102.5's micrphones sound okay but it is hard to judge since all but one show is voice tracked or syndicated. "Big" did seem to have a small amount of reverb on his mic last week but I don't know if this was by design. 102.5's reverb box has been off since 1998. Of course, BVG would be the best person to give us the truth on this. Both stations have pretty good signal coverage. I believe KMMX is 100kw.

What I'm wondering is, will anyone pick up Hot AC in the Lubbock market? Stars seems to be sticking with their Mainstream AC and all-syndicated line-up. It would seem very easy for another station to start playing some variation of "80s, 90s and Now." Anyone hear any rumblings? Maybe someone else should pick up the JACK FM format?

My guess would be no. The format is not as popular as it was say 10-15 years ago. It seems that very few stations nationwide are successful in "flipping" to Hot AC in recent years. Sure there are still some stations that crank out good numbers, Mix 102.9 Dallas comes to mind (they are #2 in cume). However, if you take a look around the country, most of the Hot AC stations today were around during the Hot AC/Modern AC boom of the mid to late 90s.

One recent trend I have seen is that Hot AC stations are sounding more like CHR and AC is sounding more like Hot AC. AC today sounds pretty similar to Hot AC 15-20 years ago. Take a look at the top 10 on the AC chart these days:

Who would have thought that Katy Perry's "California Gurls" would be a top 10 AC hit? All of the songs that are on the AC chart were also top 10 on the Hot AC chart...just a few weeks/months slower to get to Mainstream AC.

To me, if you take out Delilah, Stars is not as sleepy as it was a few years ago. My guess is that it will stay the course or shift a little more toward Hot AC to try to own both Mainstream AC and Hot AC in the market.

Mix100 get jingles, new ones!

Ok, KISS has the KIIS FM package.
So of course, what did Mix get?

The Z100 NY package...
Sounds good! Mix is starting to sound like pretty good CHR. Lubbock has a great little rivalry going now, and it reminds me of when I was growing up in Boston, listening to Kiss108 battle it out with WHTT and WZOU. San Diego had Q106 and Z90.

This is good for the listener. Competition creates choices, forces people to improve their product.
