The music on the later versions of KGSR wasn't targeted at 55+. They raised quite a fuss about it when they moved to 93.3 to begin with and the music was revamped to target younger demos. Subsequent PDs didn't age it back.
KGSR wasn't going after the 55+ audience, but that seems to be AAA's default audience now. It wasn’t getting enough of the 25-54 crowd to pull its weight in that demo. That’s a problem for most AAA stations today. They have the same audience now that they had 20 years ago. I generally like those stations, and I think KGSR has always sounded good. The problem is I'm 46 and among the youngest members of their audience.
From what I'd heard, KGSR was able to keep its billing up because Emmis required buying it to buy some of the other stations in its cluster. If you wanted to buy KLBJ-FM or Bob, you had to buy KGSR, too. I don’t know if that’s still required, but I wouldn’t be surprised.
