Lucy 93.3 going dance?

As a listener many many years ago of Mega 93-3 and 99-7, this will be interesting to check out.

However, and this is only speculation, I will be very surprised if Lucy is still around this time next year.

At first glance, I'm saying its a temporary holiday weekend thing with PD Jay Michaels playing the music he enjoys (also was PD of Mega), but the final song they played at midnight before the special playlist started was N'Sync's "Bye Bye Bye"...

Waterloo has completely ruined most of their Austin stations, so why not destroy Lucy as well. KGSR is a mere shadow of its former glory.

One could argue that KGSR hasn't been worth a flip since it was still occupying 107.1.

I disagree with this strongly.

Lucy and the CHR iteration before it on 93.3 have struggled to find their footing. I'm not sure how you can "destroy" something that isn't a proven success yet.

I suspect the reason ACL Radio/"KGSR" was moved is because a AAA on full-market signal was not viable anymore compared to the projections of what another format might be able to generate.

For what it is worth, I enjoy the more eclectic format of ACL Radio more than the previous "Radio Austin" on 107.1 before the playlist was broadened with the jump to 93.3.

107.1 is not an ideal signal for AAA as it is shaky in the western part of Travis County and most of Williamson County including Cedar Park, Leander, and Georgetown (which are the fastest growing part of the market). 107.1 is however a great signal for a spanish-language format.

As for the rest of the cluster...

Bob is as good as ever, arguably better with the signal move-in.

Both KLBJs are holding strong.

La Z seems to be doing fine.

101X might be having a weaker run lately, but it isn't a former shell of itself. And the alternative format is struggling more than it has in the past.

ESPN 102.7 is a work in progress it seems. Lots of cross promotion on 590.

Nothing has been destroyed by Waterloo and I suspect Lucy will either get some more tweaks or they will try something else entirely (590 simulcast?).

Nice soundtrack on 93.3 to lift up this rainy, dreary 4th of July weekend.

Looks like the station is named after Lucy Johnson, daughter of the former president.

It's still dance, this may last through the 4th. I just heard an announcement "Here's more party, on Lucy 93-3".

Just wish they wouldn't speed up some of the songs, but overall not bad.

They just played “The Launch” DJ Jean (Get ready for the launch). Might not be a flip to dance but could be something else.

Also, they’re now playing “Praise You” Rita Ora. I think that’s the 40th time I heard it this weekend on all dance stations 🤣🤣🤣🤣Not complaining but “ I have to praise you like I should”…. Is pretty catchy with the house style drums striking up as she sings it😝

Non-dance Lucy seems to be back, perhaps with a slightly tweaked music mix? Slightly more up-tempo? I haven't listened long enough to know for sure.

Artist/Song announcement tags have returned as well.

It's much more upbeat than before. And definitely dance friendly compared to other stations in and outside of the market.

Been listening to the Party ATX HD3 feed online; in my view one of the best presentations of CHR/Dance. Only wish the bitrate was better. The Lucy party weekend was great too; pretty sure the Buzz Junkies Radio Edit of "Dancing on My Own" by Robyn was aired!

93.3 is a 100kW station with full coverage in the #32 market in the country. From a selfish point of view if the station isn’t meeting its profitability goals it would be cool if 24/7 Dance Hits were given a try on this kind of a signal especially considering they’re neck and neck with their own HD2 (and 250-watt 97.1 translator) “Austin City Limits Radio” in the 6+, both with ratings in the 1s.

Given the creativity and acumen of this programmer, no doubt he’s got ideas for how to attempt to mainstream the dance format and how it all could work in 2023. If and when Dance Hits doesn’t work? The powerful signal can go back to trying to shave off a share or two from the country or pop stations or whatever.

With no skin in the game it can be enjoyable to speculate from time to time for fun and nothing more. Brings one back to when we used to advocate for the CHR/Dance format on this site 20 years back!

Name a single dance station in the US that is in the Top 10 in ratings. Top 15? Top 20? Of course, there are not many of them to compare, and even in that fact lies the truth that the format does not work in the US.

There are plenty of dance stations to stream online from Europe and other parts of the world. The UK ones are even in English. I won't link here, because this is a thread about Austin, but it's not difficult to find dance music radio to listen to.

Well hell, ma'am. Never before has that stopped anyone. I, for one, applaud your restraint. 👏
