Ludington rest area bandscan 5/9

I was coming back from Grand Rapids to Manistee today and I had to relieve myself at the rest area south of Ludington. I was getting strange stations on the dial, so I decided to go up to the top of the scenic overlook at that rest area and take a spin around the dial.

Wow, those Chicago signals from about 150 miles away travel across the lake by, I guess, temperature inversion over the lake...if not inversion, probably make it anyway.

I measured it, and the Chicago sticks are exactly 150 miles from that point. WVIX is 175 miles away and is only a Class A station. The only full-power Chicagos I didn't get (93.9, 94.7, 98.7, 101.1, 102.7, 103.5) all have strong locals or semi-locals on co-channels.

WZSR (105.5) and WSJY (107.3) are particularly impressive. WZSR is my local class A 6kw station, and is probably a little farther from Ludington than the Chicago sticks would be. WSJY....which is near Madison, WI (and about 65 miles northwest of me) would probably be farther away still.

Those did surprise me. If I were to get anything from Madison from there, I thought I would get WIBA (101.5) or WOLX (94.9) before WSJY. But then again, I have received WSJY in Manistee once. And some of the stations were beating out much closer and stronger stations. Also, none of the stations in this part of Michigan run I-BLOC.
These full power Chicago stations I didn't get:
93.9 WLIT - Semi-local WDOR on 93.9 and local WWKR on 94.1
94.7 WLS - Semi-local WZOR on 94.7 and local WKZC on 94.9
98.7 WFMT - Local WLDN on 98.7 (five miles from location of bandscan, just signed on last fall)
101.1 WIQI - Semi-local WIXX on 101.1
102.7 WVAZ - Local WMOM on 102.7 (three miles from location of bandscan)
103.5 WKSC - Local 100kW blowtorch WTCM on 103.5 (55 miles from bandscan location and still stopped the scan despite many other stations from that area being completely wiped out)

Those are some great catches, ftballfan.

My one and only DXing experience with the enhancement of one of the Great Lakes was on the AM band the time I had a change of planes in Cleveland.

It was midday and I had about an hour until the next plane and I got out my Sony Walkman to see what the local stations were like.

760 WJR Detroit had a strong signal and AM reception sucks inside airport terminals. Even the locals didn't sound local.

The same thing happens on AM here. I can get almost every AM in eastern Wisconsin (except some graveyarders) during the day from Manistee, MI. It helps that there is only one AM station within 40 miles of here (and it is a graveyard AM that has a bad signal into Manistee)

These Madison area stations all have good signals, as do the Madison stations on 98.1 and 104.1. WOLX is probably the best of the bunch, but they're located northwest of town, so I seldom hear them. I'm about 80 miles southeast of "Mad City" and WIBA is not unusual, although not exactly a regular. WSJY is southeast of town (in Fort Atkinson) and pretty reliable for me, even with Chicago local WGCI "next door" on 107.5.

There are locals on 94.9 and 101.5, but they are both on reduced power (101.5 is down to 250W and is licensed to run 6kW; 94.9 is licensed to run 17kW but I don't think they're running much more than 1kW). On 101.5, I was hearing Iron Mountain on the way down (on Sunday) and South Bend on the way back with no sign of Madison or Manistee (the local).

This has me thinking of a place here in Florida I've been planning to go to hopefully one of these upcoming weekends because of the scenery.

But I'm wondering also, should I take my radio and do an FM bandscan too?

It's the area of Zephyrhills which is only about 30 miles northeast of Tampa and has nice hills that reminded me of the foothills of northern California the last time I passed through there many years ago.

Since Florida is so flat, 200 foot plus hills seem like mountains almost and I was wondering if it would make much of a difference in FM reception. I know the Tampa and Orlando stations would be heard there hills or not but maybe I could hear stations from more distant parts of the state?

I should have thought of doing an FM bandscan when I was at a similar place a couple years ago called called Sugarloaf Mountain which is about 70 miles north of here.

Here are a couple of my pictures.

And a view from the top..
