Ludlow Porch

When I worked for Clear Channel at the Mid-West Georgia studios in Newnan, we synidcated The Ludlow Porch Show on WCOH 1400 AM and WVCC 720 AM. I know the show was for the "Blue Hair" demographic, I thought it wasa pretty decent show tha wa listenable. WVCC dropped the shw in 2005 and WCOH dropped the show when it flipped formats last year. Is Ludlow still doing the show or is it The Ludlow Porch show in name only with someone else hosting? I heard Ludlow was a pretty nice guy to meet.

He is still doing the show. You can listen to it online at funseekers.net. I ran into Ludlow and his wife Nancy last October in Jasper, GA which is close to where he lives. He still holds the Whacko parties on Labor Day at Burts farm between Ellajay and Dawsonville. He asked me if I was interested in helping to get more stations signed up as I am in between jobs currently. I was thankful that he wanted to offer me some help. If you are looking for some good morning programming (9am-12noon) on your station, contact Denny at their website.

Of course, his show is not for everyone, but there is a faithful following and a committed group of supporters.

I wish WCHK-AM would put him on after "America's Morning News" and cut back on the spanish program. Then bring back local programming. Byron Dobbs knew the right thing to do.

Confirmed...Ludlow is a very nice guy to meet as well as work with. We would run into each other when he was doing mornings on WSB radio back in the mid 80's and I would poke my head in the studio to shout at Miller Pope who was his producer at the time. (I was working the t-v side at the time.) Miller and I had worked together at GST when it was a real Newsmonster.

Frankly, the more talk radio in general swirls down the proverbial s--t hole, the more desirable Lud's brand of chatter becomes. That's one "no hair' or feather-challenged Magpie's opinion.

I am with you magpie...talk radio is not heading in a good direction. Ludlow's fans were (AND ARE) very loyal listeners and I could tell appreicated everyone of them. A couple of ears back, one of Ludlow's very loyal listeners and callers (Miss Conduct) passed away from cancer and he was at her funeral. That action speaks volumes.

Produced his show at WSB for a long time. He is truly one of the nicest guys you'll lever meet. Honest, funny, and a good friend...actually more like the big brother I never had. More than once I've had to call on him for advice or counsel...and whatever he told me I knew I could take to the bank! I've quoted him so many times my kids thought he really was my big brother. But he's that way with everyone. Never heard anyone say a disparaging word about him...and that's rare in radio. A real "broadcaster" and there are few of them left. He's an icon and I'm glad he was one of the original inductees in the GRHOF. He deserves it. His show is a mirror of his personality....100% positive. Never one to give in to the "shock and negative" sound of talk radio. The bean counters didn't understand his show, or uncanny ability to communicate one on one with the listener. Something he's still doing daily. BTW if you get a chance check out his books...sounthern culture from a true gentleman. His advice, counsel and friendship is something I'll always cherish. And yes I still owe him a ham.

If I may I'd like to add another admirable quality about Ludlow. When life dealt him and his family a hard blow some years ago, and he's taken some hard hits along the way, he sucked it up and kept on going.

This edited citation from Wikipedia:

"Bill Sanders, President of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters for more than a quarter of a century, says of Ludlow Porch, 'He's a true American humorist in the style of Will Rogers. Ludlow's view of the world is a little skewed from center and that difference from the ordinary guarantees peals of laughter. Ludlow lives to make people laugh...mostly at themselves.'

Ludlow was inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame in 2007."

Right now this country could use a few more Ludlow's on the air admonishing people to try to be more kind to one another. Unfortunately, people like Luddy are as rare as hens' teeth.

You guys are right. There aren't broadcasters like Ludlow anymore. I think it is a much training as personality. In some ways, Ludlow reminds me of Red Jones (he was gracious enough to always do interviews with me about his career and Rhubarb Jones holds him in high regards) . Both men are true broadcasters. They both believe in outting on te best show possible withou offending any one and communicating one on one with people.

Years ago I put Luddy on WGAD in Gadsden when I was running the station. He became so popular that one day I was listening to the show and I heard him annouce that the City of Gadsden was bringing him in to do his show for the introduction of the riverboat. So, I called him up and told him if he was coming to town that he had to bring me one of his t-shirts. It said: "Don't Touch That Liberal, You Don't Know Where He's Been". I have it to this day. If only it still fit!

I will never forget one Saturday afternoon, way back when I was a producer and board op at WCNN 680. Ludlow was mgr then and came into the studio to talk to me. He and I had a good chat, and after he informed me of what a great job he thought I did, he shook my hand and to my suprise was 2 folded c notes and he told me to take out my wife for a very nice dinner.. She was expecting our 2nd child and it was quite a suprise.. She had a great time, although several years later, she decided she wasnt having a great time anymore.. LOL.. But those are great memories for sure. But thats ok.. I now have a wonderful wife who lets me be who I really am.. A RADIO GEEK.. Studio in home, and internet radio station.. gotta love that..!

This thread makes me sad for what most of talk radio has become - a gaping sewer hole. Ludlow was a good example of what radio used to be full of, a place where talented people tried to create a relationship with an audience based on good feelings, good music, and laughter. The business now assumes that talk radio can't exist without a neo-McCarthy era of fear, anger, loathing and xenophobia. The country won't last long with a bunch of Joe Pyne wannabees on the air.
