Lufkin-Nacogdoches Ratings..

Big props to go KYKS for holding their 16.0, while competition KJCS fell from a 5.3 to 4.7! Danny does a fantastic job with this station, and anyone that can sit down and talk to him for just 5 minutes can completely understand why KYKS constantly does well.

KSML is holding their 7.3 from the previous book as well. I'd like to see a little (well programmed) competition for them. Be it that only a certain number of people in the market would ever listen to Spanish-speaking radio, they're doing a great job with it.

KAFX had a 2.0 point drop from 17.3 to 15.3, but I'll go out on a limb and say it's because of market size (which is reflected in sample size), and the fact it's CHR. Watch the next book for changes, as CHR tends jump up and down a bit more than other formats. (18-34 samples are hella hard to get, given the absense of "land-lines" in many of these households.)

KTBQ from a 4.0 to 5.3! Woo! Some would say it's a niche-format (which are hard to survive in a small market), but with consistent 4/5/6 numbers, it's holding strong! It's apparent that while it may not be the 'main focus', there are many passionate listeners and music decisions.

KJCS had a drop from 5.3 to 4.7, battling a station with a 16.0 rating. I'm not sure what the ownership really sees in the point of this. Sure, they're still apparently getting some advertising dollars. Why not take a risk, and go for more? I'd be in favor for a flip to AC.

Barring something no one can predict, KYKS will always be the 500 pound gorilla in the Luf/Nac market. They were doing it right even before Clear Channel bought it.

I'm just curious. Does Larry Gunter still work at KYKS? He was their sales manager when I worked at KJCS in the 80s. Is he still above ground and breathing? Or has he gone to that big sales meeting in the sky?

I never worked for Larry but I always respected him as a worthy competitor and a nice guy.

I would like to add that GAP has been tweeking the playlist alot on KTBQ. They have been putting alot of surveys on their VIP section asking about various songs and changing the playlist accordingly. It seem to me that they are showing a greater intrest in KTBQ and that maybe the reason for the ratings boost.

Being one of their regular listners, I really like the proactive approach to the playlist. If they only played a little more modern rock, they would totally be the tops in my book.
