AHHH what other market in "its area" would be there???? Isnt this question a little...........skewed???

As for Lufkin, it sucks...nothing original, most of it sat fed.....106.5 out of Jacksonville sounds ok....93.1 out of Tyler could use some improvement....but other than that, it doesnt sound any different than any other small local market.....100.1 has NO Low end in their audio (Jones audio network).....JACK 103.7 sounds better in MONO than most of the LFK stations do.

Most of it's satellite fed? I don't believe the big players are... 95.5, 105.1, 103.3, 107.7, 96.3

I think "better sounding" is more of an understatement, ilistentotheradio. Try "fairly souding." One of the best sounding there are the GAP stations that I thought sound their best. All others are either satellite-fed or automated.

I lived in Lufkin in the 80s and Luf/Nac was a lively and competitive market -- then.
I know a lot has changed since then, and some of the stations are now carrying satellite programming, and someone here has said some are automated, which is almost the same thing.

Do any stations in Lufkin or Nac have local programming with local DJ's? If so, which ones?

I believe 95.5, 103.3, and 105.1 all have local programming with local DJ's (with the exception of a shift or two), and I think 107.7 is programmed locally as well.

Here's what I can tell so far...

93.9 New-Yet to be heard. Antenna is up and should debut anytime within a few weeks.
94.7 Is satellite with no local.
95.5 Is locally programmed with syndicated mornings, voice tracked in mid day and night. Live afternoon drive.
96.3 Is locally programmed with live afternoon drive. More live DJ's to come.
98.1 New-Yet to be heard. On air target date prior to October 14th.
99.3 New-Yet to be heard. On air target date prior to March 18th.
100.1 Satellite with the exception of a live morning show.
101.9 ¿No Comprende?
103.3 Is locally programmed & mostly live
105.1 Is locally programmed with live and voice tracked DJ's
107.7 Is locally programmed with syndicated mornings and voice tracked the rest of the day.

Wow !

That many new stations coming into the Luf/Nac market? I'm impressed that so many people see a radio future for that area, but I'm afraid I don't share their optimism.

Lufkin has lost two of its biggest employers just recently. The Lufkin Industries Trailer Division, and the Abitibi Paper Mill. Hundreds of jobs are gone and not coming back.

That means less overall gross income for the entire area, and fewer dollars circulating in the Lufkin economy. That's not good news for radio and TV, because local businesses won't be spending as much on advertising.

In my opinion, unless they find a way to pay their bills without local advertising, some of those new stations and maybe even some of the old stations aren't going to survive this economic downturn.

But, I could be wrong, and I really hope I am.

Take a look at the ratings, and amount of people who listen to the radio. It's a very radio-involved market.

Yes it is very radio involved. The ratings are there, but what we're seeing is more radio stations trying to get a piece of a shrinking pie.

There aren't as many dollars as there were two and three years ago, but more stations are competing for them.

Lufkin's economy is shrinking and that's not a good trend. In fact it's just the opposite of what people with money to invest in radio stations want to see. I'm willing to bet that the people investing in these new Lufkin stations are also aware of it.

I'll be the most surprised person in town if they all go on the air.

Angelina county has repositioned itself in the last few years. They've gone from an idustrial county to a retirement county. Lots of people moving into the Lufkin area. Tons of new restaurants,,new movie theater,,construction all over town. They also have two fairly new race tracks that are attracting race fans from all over. Things seem to be pretty good in the Lufkin area,,,don't count them out yet!!

As far as Lufkin Industries an paper mill - The trailer plant has been running on a skeleton crew for almost a year and a half. They have only been making one or two types of trailers since downsizing again. At one time they made six types of trailers at the peak when I worked there. Most of the people still over there are eligible for retirement or close and those that aren't are transferring to other divisions. LI have got thing going for the remaining people over there. It hurts with the trailer plant closing but it will not affect the economy as bad as the paper mill closure. The paper mill hit our economy hard but we have recovered. They are building a new power plant on the north side of Lufkin so that will help a lot. Also they are building an industrial park just west of the former paper mill.

Now onto radio. IMHO the radio market here is just pitiful. There only a handful of LIVE dj's here anymore. Most of the stations just prerecord everything and leave. I was listening to 95.5 the other day and a dj was making a very short spill and I passed him in the new company SUV 5 miles from the GAP station, so it is not all live. 107.7 has actually started to play something besides there musty, dusty, same old play list. The Yates camp is even worse. Most of there live dj's are all on their am side. And the new 96.3 is worse than 95.5 use to be under the reigns of cc. The morning shows are crap. Kidd on 95.5 and John B. & B. on 107.7 At one time 107 gave John B. & B. the boot and played Walton & Johnson up here and it was great until CC gave them the dump few years back and 107 went back to John B. & B.

Well I'll shut up now and climb down of my soapbox.

Funny, but I dont recall 65+ being a major area of radio sales and ratings....25-54 sure....even 18-34...but once past 54, radio doesnt care.....(or it didnt)....sure the AREA may try to sell itself as a retirement area...but then retirees dont SPEND lots of "disposable income" like the younger groups do, because they dont have it! The older folks have to make their cash last. They buy the retirement home and maybe eat out (too much...thats a killer to the budget) but not much else. Lufkin still have a low growth rate.....(but most of East Texas does...from Beaumont to Center or further north, less than 10% whereas the rest of the state sees 24-40% growth! BPT area is seeing lots of jobs, etc due to plant expansion...but dont think that will improve radio in the Triangle...and it will balloon for a while and then probably deflate in 10 yrs or so.....(unless they dont screw things up this time)...Conroe is outpacing Lufkin right now big time...but thats due to upper middle class flight from Houston to Lake Conroe area...
