LV Now Market #32

I keep reading that the growth of Las Vegas has slowed due to the bad economy. Yet according to the new Arbitron market rankings LV edges up from #33 to #32 passing Kansas City which moves 32-33.

It has slowed considerably. LV gained a little, 1.570 to 1.650 million but Kansas City lost population, 1.667 to 1.642, allowing LV to pass it. Were KC to have remained flat, it would have stayed 32nd.

Los Angeles lost population... 11.028 million to 10.682 million.

This is the population revision that Arbitron makes once a year. This time, it has real Census data on total population, not the annual projection. But in both cases, the data comes from Claritas, not the Census Bureau.

The Vegas newspapers did mention this continued growth, but looking at vacancy signs all over town, I wonder if people might be elsewhere and retaining their Nevada ID. I think the population numbers are based on DMV stats. Re-registering a car can be a hassle, and often it must be re-financed, Nevada has higher unemployment benefits than many neighboring states and of course no State income tax. Plus, if someone is a homowner, an out of state address would mean they lose their owner occupied exemption.
