I was informed that Radio Engineer and station owner Lyle Evans passed away today. Lyle did engineering work for many stations in the region, and was also the main engineer for the Starboard stations. In addition Lyle was involved with the ownership of several stations.

I just wanted to pass the word along about this.
______________

Sorry to hear that. There are a lot of radio stations in the midwest that wouldn't exist if it weren't for Lyle and his almost magical ability to get stations created for small to medium sized cities, long after everyone else thought that the well was dry.

I never met him, but I have a lot of respect for an Engineer who has accomplished the things that Mr. Evans did.
______________

WGBA in Green Bay started as WLRE - the calls stand for Lyle R. Evans. He launched it as an independent station in (I believe) 1980. He was also one of principals of TV52, Inc., along with Wayne R. Stenz. They applied for channel 52 in Mayville in September of 1988 and received a construction permit that December.

He was listed as the consulting engineer on WJJA's application for channel 49.

That's right - he even hosted a Saturday midnight call-in show, "Nightlife with Lyle," in the early days of the station, live from the transmitter building (before 26 got its own studios).

I also believe that WMBE in Chilton stands for Maska Brothers & Evans, as Lyle launched that station in '85 with Steve Maska and his brother.
