Lynchburg ESPN 93.3 FM

Hello,
I just found this board today and have enjoyed reading a lot of posts.I live in the Lynchburg area and I don't work in the radio industry,(too cut-throat for me) ::) ,I do work on radios, mostly public service 2-way ranging from VHF,UHF,800 and 900 mhz bands, well back on subject here.

I had heard earlier in the year that this station was going to happen and around late May,I started seeing just a carrier signal but in June it started up,it is the same as 106.3 FM out of Gretna. It is a translater call letters W227BG or something close to that and it is very limted in coverage, the signal basically is gone after you pass the Brookville High School-Lowes area ans is fairly strong in the New London area.It is part of the Three Daughters Media highway 460 - 29 corridor cluster, anyone out there in radio land have any info on the future of this 93.3 station?I haven't been able to get any info from anyone that works there. Thanks in advance,

The translator is located just south of Timberlake with its tower near 460 BUS. It does rebroadcast WMNA, however, radio-locator.com is wrong in saying the WMNA is simulcast with WLNI. WMNA and WVGM (1320 in Madison Heights) provide ESPN Radio to that area, while WLNI is an independent news station owned by Centennial Broadcasting. The signal is very weak on the 93.3 translator, considering the fact that on most days WFLS from Fredericksburg can be heard on a stock car radio in town.

The problem with 93.3 rebroadcasting 106.3 WMNA is that WMNA has some different programming than 1320 am WVGM,example, 106.3 broadcast Averett College Basketball,Danville Braves and Uva Sports, which Uva is being broadcast in Lynchburg on 97.9 fm.
Seems like 1320 am and 93.3 fm should be on the same page if possible.

Is WFLS from Fredericksburg a country station? That's probably what is bleeding in on my walkman while I am out walking.
Lynchburg is not being served very well by these stations.

No changes ,it is still the same, even after a year of running at very low power.I live 2 miles from the translator and have bad recepetion.

WFLS is a country station, and here in Charlottesville I can pick them up just fine.

I've gotten 'FLS on my car radio as far away from them as just north on Lynchburg on route 29...and I've also heard WWWT (formerly WTOP, WTWP) 107.7 Warrenton VA just before crossing into Albemarle County on 29, south of Charlottesville. (I live in NC, but traveled in VA a lot)

that 107.7 (WWWT) signal reaches all the way down past the VA/NC line, day OR night...more than just a once in a while it overpowers the "twitter" that 107-5KZL is spitting out some 50 miles away from me.

i have no idea why i can get that station so well sometimes

And just whereabouts do you live in NC carlos? (Just the general area will do) I'm just wondering how doggone far you are from 107.7, and do you experience this condition (overpowering 107.5) often?

thats for me to know ;) haha

but seriously, central southside VA. and far northern stretches of the Piedmont of NC is where I call my normal roaming territory :D - and for several months(depending on the time of year) northeastern NC and the Norfolk metro.
conditions when i get the signal aren't really any different than any other day. not really any DX-ing from any other northern VA stations. all locals are in clear and its just in a simple generic car radio. maybe it's just a simple fluke in the world of electrical waves...who knows.
i can tell you that i can NOT get that station anywhere else as clear and reliable as i do when im not travelling near Hyco Lake in Person County, NC.

on a little side note and ramble.......
not only does 107.7 pick up with nearly no static at that location, but also the weak and tiny WNRS 89.9. they spit out a 30 watt signal from the very top of Tobacco Row Mountain (about 2,000ft HAAT) on the north side of Lynchburg, VA. i was just up there on that mountain a few weeks back (i am fascinated in old AT&T Long Lines microwave sites, so i went out taking a few photos before American Tower desides to strip the old horn antennas. however, this one seemed to be active. woohoo, microwave isnt totally out of style! ) :D. i already knew two FM's were up there, but didnt know which one was which untill i looked into a few maps and studied my photos. so i realized that WRNS and WZZU 97.9 The Planet are side by side) WRNS has a two-bay radome covered antenna on top of a cell phone tower and WZZU is side mounted on a nondescript tower, with one bay, beside WRNS. im surprised i can get WRNS at all. given their small ERP. WZZU is even weaker and they have an extra 500 some watts under their belt.

ahhh the amazing world of radio. gotta love it! ;D

WNRS is an interesting one. I live in Charlotte County, and WNRS's 89.9 signal is quite impressive. Carries well enough down here to make WCPE 89.7 from Chapel Hill unlistenable.

my bad... WNRS... forgot that WRNS is county in southern NC. .. :D

LOL! Yeah, I've even heard WRNS 95.1 (Kinston) a pretty good ways...I think I heard 'em a little just north of Chapel Hill once, on a friend's car radio. I know I heard WERO (93.3) around the Hill a few times, before 93.1 from the Triad blows 'em out of the water LOL

Well, looks like this 93.3 translator has gone quiet in July 2010.It was supposed to go high power according to the owner 2 years ago.

W227BG has been operating from its new transmitter site in Madison Heights for two weeks.
