Lynn Martin enters TV

From Radio-Info.com, "And in a deal not yet filed with the FCC, radio station owner LYNN MARTIN is buying CW affiliate WBKI-TV/CAMPBELLSVILLE-LOUISVILLE from LOUISVILLE TV LICENSES for an undisclosed price. MARTIN's LM COMMUNICATIONS, which owns radio stations in LEXINGTON, KY, CHARLESTON, WV, and CHARLESTON, SC, is taking the station over immediately in an LMA."

Wow, who saw that coming? It will be interesting to see what the price is once the FCC paperwork is filed.

NoBody!!!

And unless Lynn has changed a whole lot, I really can't see him even attempt to run a tv station... I look for him to find someone to do an SSA, most likely, someone who already has stations in the market. Another interesting thing is that Fox has been shifting affiliations of late, and buying lesser stations in bigger markets...

Let's hope he has kids, and they really want to do some TV..

As said above that came out of nowhere. I can' speak for Lynn Martin today but LM Communications of the 80's and 90's wasn't a fun environment. The working conditions were really bad and he saddled his employees with non-competes and other paperwork that favored him plus took advantage of salaried employees by telling them they work as long as possible to get the job done so a 60 plus hour work week wasn't uncommon. If LM is the same today then the world of the WBKI staff is about to change.

From what I understand, nothing has changed with him. If I were an employee of WBKI, I'd be getting my resume polished up and getting the hell outta there as quickly as possible.

As I said, I cant seriously think that Lynn would consider for even one minute running/paying to operate a TV station. He has got to be fronting for someone, or most likely already has a deal in place to have someone else operate it, and pay him...

unlike most of these deals, (SSA"s), the owning party usually stays hands off...I would be surprised if Lynn would allow that...but just maybe...

of course, if they have a nice plane or helicopter, that would explain it all. LOL

I thought the same thing. Considering how tight Martin is with his money, I can't see him spending the money to run a TV station properly. "Properly" being the operative word here. I'm wondering if he has a deal to flip the station, or allow WHAS/Belo operate it.

Won't be those guys. They already have the only duopoly allowed in Louisville. However Martin can buy WBKI and LMA it to WHAS. but then again, would the FCC allow an LMA in a market this size that already has a duopoly?

I would think an LMA would be acceptable. Indianapolis has two duopolies (LIN-owned WISH and WNDY, and Tribune-owned WXIN and WTTV) which passed muster, and Evansville has one as well (Nexstar owns WEHT and operates WTVW). I'd be more surprised if the FCC didn't allow it ... if that's what LM really wants to do.

Looks like WDRB/WMYO and WBKI will be ran out of the same building.

Well color me surprised. I figured they'd been moving to Chestnut Street. Wonder what this means for WHAS news on WBKI now? And knowing how Lynn operates, WDRB/WMYO will be footing the bill for all this, too.

Me too... Upgrade some of those radio stations first.

From the video they are going to upgrade the signal... They are maxed out at 1,000 kW already. Yeah, you can kiss WHAS-11 news at 10 off there I am sure. And that's my point of view - as Bill Lamb would say. ::)

Good question. They have a LP station that is supposed to cover Louisville I thought. Not sure if they put it where Louisville, Lexington and Campbellsville can pick it up.

They had a Class A TV station. Channel 28, and it's companion digital channel, was sold to Word of God Fellowship in 2010. Word of God is a division of Marcus Lamb's Daystar TV. There has been applications to move it to Bardstown, but so far, nothing has become of them.

On a side note, the application to assign the license to Martin has yet to be filed with the FCC.

A full power license on channel 19 (WBKI) is a valuable resource, especially in light of FCC efforts at recovering spectrum and re-packing the TV broadcast band.

Such a resource might have a certain appeal to broadcasters with assignments at the high-end of the UHF band (say channel 49 and 51).
