M Dung

Funny, for most of his radio existence I thought "M Dung" was a Chinese guy, given the name. I only listened to him once, but he didn't agree with me because it sounded like he was trying to imitate Wolfman Jack, and nobody imitates an original. Nobody.

Anyhow, I came upon this SF Gate article on M Dung and his current life. I'm not exactly sure why, but his life seems really depressing to me. But this seems to be true of a lot of radio people, people who seem to shine only when they're on the radio. He apparently lives in a small barren apartment by himself in San Mateo and has to get up at 3:30am to do sysadmin stuff.

Anyhow, here's the link: http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/Ex-DJ-M-Dung-plugging-aaywaay-on-podcast-3735480.php

I remember listening to "Dungboy" on 104.5 KFOG Yau Baby, Badahhh! I recorded a lot of his shows on KFOG and transfered them to CD and still listen to them. Awaaayyy!

yes -- my sentiments exactly. His tenure at KFOG was before my time, more or less (I moved here in 1991), but I remember the month that I arrived in SF, the Bammies (remember them?) were being broadcast live and he was there, interviewing people backstage and whatnot. And it seemed like Every. Other. Word was "Oh-DAY!!" and "ay-WAYY!" and I'm sitting there going "who the(bleep) is this MORON??" He truly came across (to the un-initiated, at least) as talent-challenged. But I'm constantly encountering people (especially recently, during the KFOG "Twitch" debacle) who still miss Mr Dung. People really liked that schtick, I guess.

Yeah. That was the main reason I posted the link to the article; I figured his fans might want to see something about him. Naturally, my comments pissed him off, but, well that's what happens when someone chooses to become a public figure.

Schtick is interesting because we all know it's schtick and it should be as tired as a joke we've already heard, but for some reason it plays more like a familiar song that we want to hear again and again.

I worked with Dung back in the 90's for a bit at a AAA in Phoenix who hired a former KFOG programmer. Mike came to town and did mostly imaging for the stations. I think he tried the M. Dung character on air once and the audience just didn't get it.

Super nice guy. Super creative. It used to crack me up to hear the receptionist page "Mike Dung, please call the front desk."

People really liked that schtick, I guess.

I'm reminded of the two guys who did the one of the longest running local kids TV shows (1954 - 1989) where I grew up. To my generation, Wallace and Ladmo were the coolest things ever. They tried going national in the late 60's and it blew up in their faces. So they went back to doing their local show. If you played a tape of one of their shows to anyone who didn't grow up watching it they'd think it was a bunch of stupid sketches between blocks of low-budget cartoons, but to me it's my childhood.

The Idiot Show is no different. Either you get it or you don't. There is no in-between.
