MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS - SAME LOVE

Third smash in a row after Thrift Shop and Can't Hold Us. Already no1 in Australia and New Zealand, the two countries where it has been released so far.

Radio in the US just can't wait to play this song. AMP RADIO WODS FM in Boston already added it while they have Thrift Shop and Can't Hold Us both in super power rotation.

Can't Hold Us will smash in April, May and June and then Same Love is coming.

I think that's because they performed it on the Ellen Degeneres Show

And BTW I notice that CBS has both Thrift Shop and Can't Hold Us in power on ALL their stations except WNKS ::)

A future KBKS *SMASH* hit - since Macklemore is from Seattle...

This may be a very fitting summer hit, as the Supreme Court is expected to announce their rulings on the same sex marriage cases towards the end of June. An outcome on the side of gay rights could make this song even more popular than its destined to become- as there is already a current of changing opinion on this subject. Not to mention, in CHRs target demographic, gay marrriage is strongly approved of by the majority- including over 80 percent approval in people younger than 30.

I'm not a hip-hop fan at all, but I'm really feeling this track. It's an even more provocative plea for LGBT equality than Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" - and a lot more heartfelt.

It's yet to be played on any CHRs here in Dallas/Fort Worth, but it's been receiving airplay from Alternative station KDGE 102.1 The Edge.

It's probably more likely to connect because Macklemore is actually treating it seriously. I mean, who's gonna take Lady Gaga seriously?

I hope he's ready for the level of mainstream success he's rising to. He's been big in Seattle for a while.

There's something about the message of this that somehow doesn't seem right IMO - the woman singing sounds like she'd like to change, but she can't, almost like she's been cornered into her sexuality - the theme of it seems to be that gay people would like to change, but they can't, so they settle for what they are

It sounds like it was written by a straight guy who wants to promote gay rights, but who believes he is somehow superior

Respectfully disagree with that last post. I don't interpret the lyrics of the chorus that way at all. I get the vibe of defiance in the face of homophobia rather than shame about being lesbian.

And even if the narrator of the chorus does or did wish she could change, even that is real and true to life. So many LGBT people do grow up being taught that what they are is an abomination to God and man. Not every gay or lesbian person is comfortable with his or her sexual identity; it's very sad but true. A friend of mine was telling me the other day about another friend of his who is a devout Catholic and also gay and is extremely ashamed of it and wishes he could change. I think the lyrics of "Same Love" speak to the conflicting emotions that many LGBT people, especially those raised in a conservative religious background, do experience.

Agree with Chris. In the chorus she says, "And I can't change, even if I tried, even if I wanted to". That doesn't mean she wants to be something other than what she is or wishes she was straight. It's a response to the homophobic community who think gays can just turn straight and she's saying shes gay because it's how she was wired. She can't change because it's who she truly is.

I guess to me, she sounds weak and defensive, like she's pleading with people to accept her

I'd rather hear her say "I can't change, nor do I want to" - but just IMO

I think thats what a lot of straight people might feel- but I venture to guess that it is different for the LGBT community, because many grow up in less than ideal or supportive communities.

I always thought being gay would be harder in some respects than say, being a person of color. Chances are good if you're Black or Latino, you were raised in a household where some if not all of your family members are like you. Most gay children grow up with straight parents though, so you can't even turn to your family for support because they might not necessarily understand what you're going through. I think the song strikes at this chord- that a lot of gay kids grow up thinking they need to change, regardless of whether their parents may be supportive or not, because the assumption for most people is that they're straight and their kids are straight too.

Heard it for the first time yesterday and INSTANTLY LOVED IT. Not so much the sound, but the fact that it actually talked about something and had an important message. I know many hip hoppers or people in general will hate on the song or even the group. Hate it or love it, this IS an example of what real hip hop is! But I can't expect too many people these days to know what real hip hop used to be like. Anyway, bottom line is that this song is worth listening to. Let the urban town stations ignore it and continue to claim to be the hip hop capitals of the world, but that won't make the song any less meaningful.

This song sends a powerful message. I don't think that it will be one that gets played at parties, but it has a shot to make #1.
