Could possibly be a phenomenon called tropospheric ducting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TV/FM_DX#Tropospheric_ducting). It mostly happens during the spring and fall, but it's when atmospheric conditions are such that VHF frequencies such as FM and low band TV can travel over great distances. Sometimes strong enough to interfere with local signals. My parents live in Athens. There was a time a few years ago when we were trying to watch football on WAGA channel 5 out of Atlanta when KXAS channel 5 out of Ft. Worth over-road WAGA's signal for about 15 minutes.

This use to happen quite often in Perry GA.On certain nights in the Summer I was able to pick up stations from Charalston South Carolina,Savannah GA,Senaca South Carolina,Chattanooga Tennessee and Lakeland Florida. The Charalston SC station was WAVF.Right before WAVF went live they was playing crashing ocean waves. It was clear enough for me to record. This happened in 1986.WAVF once they went live was a Top 40 Rock Station.

Lots of strange stuff going on this summer. I remember a recent Sunday driving up I 16 when I was picking up stations in Texas on the frequencies of stations not more than 20 miles from my location. Bet local advertisers were not too happy.
