Macon TV station dumps ABC

Um, yea. This is gonna go over like a turd in a punchbowl. If he has a problem with the soaps, why not just don't clear them?

ABC might not be too kind to that. They don't mind the twice a month preemptions from WSB-TV, but they probably would not be happy with the soaps not being cleared (read about WHDH-TV Boston and NBC involving their threat not to carry Jay Leno).

As I posted in the Atlanta TV board, WGXA-TV (which was the ABC affiliate from 1982-1995) will add ABC to a new digital subchannel. I suspect Fox is too valuable for them to dump, plus they still have an agreement to honor. Cox cable might use sister entity WSB-TV as the default ABC affilate on cable in the area, which might cause problems for WGXA.

One option would be to let WSB-TV come in as the area's ABC affilate. They could use translators in the area to provide an OTA signal in addition to cable (although Cox might have to jettison the cable system if they did this). WSB-TV is the default ABC affiliate for Albany and Southwest Georgia.

The station ownership made a decision. It's up to them, not you. End of story.

Dump ABC over Soaps! Really... the soaps have such bad rating... CBS has already dumped one and is about to dump a second of its soaps from the daytime lineup (not that the replacement "Let's Make A Deal w/host Wayne Brady is any good as a replacement...it's terrible) but, all trends show that soaps are on their way out.... wonder if other reasons were in play... hard to believe they'd dump ABC for a part of net programs that are about to be a thing of the past

The "soaps" excuse is smoke-and-mirrors being used by Lowell Register as a PR thing. Make no mistake about it, there's a LOT more to this story than any of Lowell's public comments about it. Follow the Benjamins, gang. The major networks are all withering on the vine. When affiliation deals are coming up for renewal, many affiliates (especially marginal ones like WPGA) are finding themselves backed into a corner with the networks wanting the stations to agree to 1) more dough in rights fees, 2) less compensation from the network to the stations for avails [or more avails], or 3) a combination of all of the above.

Having spent a number of years in the Macon broadcasting market, and having had less-than-pleasant business dealings with Register Communications, I can tell you with absolute certainty... this is a MONEY issue, not a MORAL one.
