MAD TV ENDING MAY 09

I can't say that I'm surprised about this. This season, it got so dull that I lost interest. Apparently, the same has happened to other (former) viewers. It's like almost all the funny characters are gone (my favorite was Stuart, played by Michael McDonald). The show has gone down, in the words of Keegan-Michael Key, "a whole 'nutha level."

Not suprised. I did not like the set change or the theme song change they did last year. I agree that too many good characters are gone (Stuart), and none of the other girls on the show were as cute as Nicole Sullivan.

The show was at its best when the whole gang was there: Will Sasso, Alex Borstein, Michael McDonald, Mo Collins, Aries Spears, Nicole Sullivan and Debra Wilson. My all-time favorite sketches on the show?

The PAX-TV version of The Sopranos
The Spanish version of All In The Family
Many of the sketches with Stuart (McDonald) and his mother (Collins)

The show has been a snooze-fest for the past several seasons. It's really gone down hill. Too bad they couldn't recruit some new blood to reinvigorate the show.

With news of the cancellation, will FOX put another show in its place or will they simply turn the time slot over to local affiliates?

WHAT? It can't go off the air! What about all the parodies like The Price Is Right or Dr. Phil? Instead of ending Mad TV, here's a better idea: Put Mad TV on My Network TV. Yeah, that's right-- air Mad TV in primetime! Then maybe the ratings will improve. Also, when was the last time a Spy vs Spy cartoon short aired on Mad TV? They should bring them back, too....

There was another related article I read, saying that the producers are shopping the show to other networks (mostly on cable). Their rerun deal with Comedy Central is up at the end of this calendar year, and it's possible that whomever winds with newly-produced episodes, will get the "Best of" shows as well.

That would be a mistake. The show should be allowed to die peacefully without any interim life support.

The trouble with Mad TV IMHO is the same thing that afflicted Fridays - ABC's unsuccessful answer to SNL in the early 80s - poor writing. In fact, this has also been SNL's problem for a number of years now. I'm no comedy expert - but to me - the essence of good comedy is brevity. Those ensemble skits stop being funny when they're allowed to meander on aimlessly for way too many minutes, then just end suddenly without any reason except that the commercial is coming. It's why 30 Rock is so sharp, while SNL is so dull. 30 Rock only has 22 minutes to get the job done.

Both Mad TV and Fridays had talented performers who have moved on to better projects. Those talented performers will find new homes.
