Madden to The X (OFFICIAL)

So the immediate questions that come to mind are:

1) Is this going to be a straight-up sports talk show?

2) If it is, will there be other changes to the station?

3) Could this mean the end of 970, at least after football season? Or might it mean a more immediate end to Joe Bendel's show?

4) How much pressure will this put on Paulsen, Logan and Crow?

I've said before that I could see them turning Tim Benz to a straight sports show, and rolling Dan Patrick and Jim Rome over from 970.

If they do that it then virtually begs CBS to move the B back to rock.

Smizik also made a comment in the article that once the Pens' contract is up after this season there is likely to be "spirited bidding" for the rights. Maybe, but what alternatives are there? ESPN 1250 is a really limited signal. CBS has a couple of options; the Pens would be the greatest thing that could happen to KD, but would the Pens want to go back to AM? If that answer is no, or there needs to be an FM simulcast partner, again this creates an opportunity to do more with the B. (I don't see hockey and country mixing on Y108, and Star's signal is not the best either). I don't see any way Renda or Steel City would be in the mix vs. CC, ABC/Disney and CBS here.

As Boss said, it does in fact get interesting...

it only brings one question to my mind....

Reports are that The Mouse was paying him $12K/month?

What he does is worth $144,000/yr. to anybody?

And the only skill required is the ability to continually insult callers and Bob Smizik?

Where do I sign up??? ???

I can't imagine the Pens would be interested in returning to KDKA or any other AM. They not only need an FM station, they need one with a demogrpahically-compatible audience to promote the team.

It will be interesting to see if Mark Madden is forced to interview Steeler Players he doesn't like.

On ESPN, he constantly bashed Hines Ward, Jerome Bettis and Deshea Townsend. I also wonder how he feels about his old buddy Mike Logan taking over part of his old show on ESPN?

This should improve the X's ratings in general. I say it does wonders.

:) 'Bout time... I've missed his show. Radio's been boring since he got the boot.

Most observers miss Mark's appeal. Wrestling. Consider (staged, soap-operatic) wrestling's huge cultural effect since the early-'80s when it blew up in popularity. That audience expects/demands jerk-off behavior.

Don't think Smizaks' not gettin' lottsa mileage outta this 'fued'.

;-) It will be interesting if those players could be forced to be interviewed by him.

I don't think we're gonna hear a neutered Madden. He'd LOVE to have the chance to interview the bashees.

Anyone posting here actually listened to Madden's show, other than a cursory drive-by?? For real, honestly, he is way more than hanging up on people and being boorish. Best thing about Mark is he doesn't bow down to or live in 'Stiller Nation'. Or 'Pirate, Penguin, etc, Nation'.

Actually, they are in a greeat position if they wish to create an all sports FM station, what with the contracts to all major Pittsburgh sports (Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, Pitt football/basketball) all under the CC roof. That is a decent chunk of programming, and while I wouldn't personally move the Steelers from DVE (protect the mothership and all that jazz) the rest would make for a pretty awesome sports outlet on the FM band. Any conflicts of interest between the sports, you dump the lesser property that day over to 970 (which you have to keep because the Steelers demand an FM and AM outlet for their broadcasts) and chances are, you could pretty much bury ESPN 1250 in 6 months to a year.

Pittsburgh has never had a set station to go for most of their sports, it is always baseball is on this channel, hockey over here, football someplace else and the all sports station in this market doesn't carry any of them, the idea that you could get it all under one roof is a promising one, if they choose to go that tack. Madden and Bendel are nice bookends to the programming day (at least the important parts of it), and you could fill the middays with Patrick and Rome from 970 (though Patrick is way overhyped for my tastes, that 3 hour bit he did Friday on Dan Lebetard interviewing Michael Phelps was some of the most boring inside baseball stuff I have heard on a syndicated show). 7-10 you could do either locally or off of the dish, that slot will be preempted enough with baseball and hockey through the course of the year, though his name eludes me (someone else can fill in the blank), the guy they had doing the Pirates show on Saturdays on 104.7 would be a nice fit here, he seems to be knowledgeable enough about sports (I have heard him do things besides Pirates, but that is what stuck out to me first off) and overnights you can run Fox Sports Radio also brought over from 970.

As for what to do with 970, well you could keep it for the major reason the Steelers demand an AM outlet and you don't want to give those advertising dollars to anyone else in Pittsburgh by releasing the AM rights. It would still carry the overflow programming of 105.9, when two sports schedules collide and what they do with the remaining programming really is pretty much a crap shoot. As long as whatever it is is done well, it will do better than what they are getting on the signal now.

I'm all for it and I actually do think the X will change to an all sports format. if this were to happen, CBS could flip 100.7 to an alternative music station.

Then you have to find advertisers who are interested in reaching fans of "jerk-off behavior." It's not that easy, which is why a lot of the revenue he generated at 1250 came from doing remotes at bars.

No, the Steelers can't make anybody do an interview with anyone. Bettis doesn't play any more, and is working for 1250, so it's unlikely he'd be on with Madden.

Madden doesn't bow down to anybody? He's in the Penguins' pocket.

Dont' be fooled by the 12+ numbers, 100.7 brings in very good billing. If there's a CBS station in play it would be B94.

There are too many conflicts for that to be realistic. None of those teams wants to think of itself as the "lesser property." You're also ignoring the importance of cross-promotion throughout the broadcast schedule.

One of the reasons the Steelers moved to WTAE in 1970 was they were tired of being shunted aside by Sunday afternoon conflicts with Pirates games. They got to a new station that made them the top priority and were happy, even though WTAE had a fraction of the signal and had horrible demos until Ted Atkins got there and fixed the station.

As much as I think it would make sense to do so, my gut says that it never happens.

if the x does keep the alternative format, will Mark Madden be spinning the alternative music or will his show be strictly sports?

Que?? Although he may hold back some due to his love of the Penguins/hockey in general, he's slammed the franchise when needed...

He's blasted the coach and a few specific players. But the franchise itself? Mario's franchise? No way.

Whipping Boy just signed out and said Abby would be up next. I guess we'll have to wait for Mark's official start date.

I wondered if it would happen today being that the station didn't appear to do anything to hype getting Madden.
