WSUM's Hip-Hop Offerings To Expand this Fall
This fall's programming at WSUM 91.7 FM will feature more hip-hop shows than any previous line-up the station has fielded, according to WSUM program director Celeste Terese Heule.
You may notice that David Muhammad--a Madison/WSUM hip-hop mainstay who was slated to spin at Party in The Park(1)--is absent from the list below.

The students at WSUM radio are in it for the music, not the money

Here, some of UW-Madison’s most culturally passionate and politically idealistic students make a weekly pilgrimage to a row of rooms (above Urban Outfitters) suspended over the commerce of State Street. They meet up in a lounge where the enduring promise of unsigned band posters decorating the walls overshadows the ripped carpet and foam-exposed couches.
"This used to be pretty much a loner/stoner operation," says Dave Black, a nonstudent who began working as the station’s general manager back in 1993. "We were netcast only. My whole job for eight years was to get us on the air, which finally occurred in 2002. The students now care about the identity of the station — they care how it sounds."
On one level, the story of WSUM (91.7 FM) is a long tale about a quest for a radio tower, and now, a long list of shows proudly ranging from trip-hop to prog-rock.
But on another level, WSUM is a story about a smart group of college students with a desire to be part of a media that mean something, that have values, that aren’t just about selling ads. ...
