Madonna - Sorry

Goes for adds this week. Does it stand a chance at CHR? I've love to see her have another hit in the US. "Hung Up" was a worldwide smash, but was largely ignored by US radio. :(

I doubt it will even do as well as "Hung Up".

The problem is, it's a dance record. Do you realize how much of a smash a record has to be to cross into markets where dance typically doesn't work? The last record that did this that comes to mind is DJ Sammy's "Heaven"...that was what? 2002? Yikes.

This record will stiff, IMO. They're likely not going to put the marketing dollars into it that would be necessary to make an average record stand out, and it's not good enough to stand on it's own and cross over. A record like this would have to be HUGE before it would make sense in markets that can't get away with playing dance records.

Just my 2 cents...

And yet, Cascada's "Everytime We Touch" is already Top 20 on the Pop 100.
Last time I checked Madonna was much more of a brand name when compared to Cascada, and yet "Everytime we Touch" is still able to generate some serious airplay especially all over the Northeast.
Oh, and by the way, quite a few CHRs are playing the Dance remix to Kelly Clarkson's "Because of You" in all dayparts, including 95 SX Charleston and 107.5 The River Nashville.
Edited by CHRles on 02/06/06 08:08 PM.

I'm not suggesting that NOTHING will work. I just think it's very rare, and I'm playing the odds.

The Cascada is doing very well for a dance record, but isn't yet crossing over everywhere.

Don't mistake what I said with something else. For a dance record to be mainstream everywhere, it has to be special. That isn't the case for all other genres.

You're suggesting that I said dance doesn't work ANYWHERE. Quite the contrary.

This record will probably be a hit for some, but not many.

Okay, I'll definitely acknowledge that it's fairly rare :)

But with as much crossover as it's already managed to pull off, the overall signs are very positive. Now does this mean that every Dance record stands the same chance? Probably not, but a decent Madonna record perhaps might.

I agree with you that Dance records have a harder time crossing over when compared to Rock and especially Hip Hop, there's no denying that.

Isn't the Cascada already a hit for many stations if its chart position is already relatively high?
This is what John Parker of Robbins Entertainement, the record company that distributes Cascada's music in the US, has posted as far as airplay statistics:

Re: Cascada's "Everytime We Touch"

The problem with dance records is most people don't even "try" them til they're already a hit.

We gave this tune a chance at KQID because it'd been awhile since a dance record had been on our station and thought "why not this tune?" So we tried it, and were patient with it, and lo and behold, it's getting calls now.

So many PDs are followers. Some never try and figure out their audience's likes, dislikes, tendencies, etc. to know if a song like this would even work. They just know that current national trends dictate a Beyonce' tune or an explicit candy-referenced rap "song" will drive the phones nuts.

In any event, Madonna's track record (to me) dictates that if the song's got some listenable quality to it, it deserves a try, anyhow.

Also, The new B-92 Charleston, and Rhythmic leaning 104.5 WSNX are both playing the Dance Version of Kelly Clarkson-Because of you.... And who knows what other CHRs in unrated, un-monitored markets may be playing it? Plus, we are seeing a sudden surge of Well Known Established Mainstream artists that are doing Dance Flavored records, Like Rhianna S.O.S and Gwen Stefani-Crash, and even the new LL Cool J FT J-lo Record is Retro Dance flavored. Im pretty sure Sorry will do about as well as Hung up, some stations will play it alot, and the conservative markets will sleep on it.
