Magic 100.1

In the "liberal" hot bed that New Jersey is, some more religious stations wouldn't be a bad thing.

But really. It's about dumping salary. I agree the last thing the area needs is another A/C station.

What has happened to the once great Greater Media?

This kind of stupidity should be mocked on the Jersey Shore TV show.

LOL. I doubt they'd even care. Anyway I only watch that show (sometimes) because I think the girls are hot. :) *drool* It's certainly not because the show features muscular and ripped shirtless Italian guys, tho I admit sometime I look at them and wish I was muscular like them instead of an obese whale.

I still can't believe that idiot guy punched out Nicole.      You never hit a girl!!!!!!!! :'( Kudos to MTV for fading to black in the part where he punched out Nicole. And kudos again for putting up a Domestic Violence Hotline phone number at the end of the show. And mentioning to call 911 in case of violence.

I can't believe that guy was and still is a Gym Teacher in a school! Kudo's my back side that punch was shown about 50 times in the promotions and throughout the show. One the night of the episode it actually took place is when they put the placard up.

I must be from a completely different generation. These kids families watch this and they are good with their daughters acting like skanks?

Another great oldies station falls to a over-used cookie cutter format. No more Sunday night doo-wop with TJ .:(

I know it's not the same, but if you want doo wop check out WMTR on Friday nights from 7 to 10 for "Doo Wop Drive" - live, local, requests, dedications. And like TJ, no playlist!

The only catch is you gotta listen to me for 3 hours...

Only if you promise not to spin the format wheel. Guess the format, win a prize. Where's Charlie O'Donnell?

Just heard the new Easy 93.1 from Wildwood Crest. I really like the music - perfect format for a retirement or near retirement audience. Just cannot get into the new AC. I really dislike it. It's a shame to see the older songs go by the wayside. I despise NY's Lite FM - it is totally unlistenable for me. I'm sure I will not like the new Magic 100.1 because I can't stand most of today's music. That's why I really like the formate on Easy 93.1 - I hope it lasts!

I would not mind if Magic 100 sounded like Easy 93.1.

This is what happens when you have people from Boston calling the shots for a station covering Monmouth/Ocean Counties. They don't know the market at all.

I don't think people from Boston are calling the shots, as you say. One thing about Gr. Media, each market they operate in is independently run. While they do share some ideas between marketplaces and formats, the decisions are made by the local market manager. This is a company that doesn't even have a corporate PD.

But it isn't a true simulcast...is it?

BTW....What happennings in radio today are done that are NOT cost-cutting moves? Of course it was a cost cutting move, as is everything done at almost every radio station in America these days.

what a bad station for ocean county, in the morning only traffic report is the toms river tolls on gsp music is bad and the timing is all screwed up with wmgq in the morning, and mid-day is a v/t.sorry no magic here

What the heck was Greater Media thinking? "Hey, let's drop the only Classic Hits station in the area for more soft rock, because 5 stations around here playing the same thing isn't enough"?

They made the decision to flip WJRZ before the ratings came out. We now know that it was a good book for them, as they beat many of their local competitors. The argument can be made that going from "Oldies 100" to "Greatest Hits Of The '60s & '70s" wasn't smart, as they performed even better in the prior incarnation. I know that they aren't the most desirable demo to advertisers, but we definitely have the 55+ population that will support a station that plays early rock n' roll (including pre-British Invation music). In spite of that, WJRZ still provided a format that was needed in the area ... now they're skewing much younger, with a format that will repel their former listeners in much the same way that Hit 106 did the G Rock audience. Expect WJRZ to drop to the 1's next book, with The Breeze possibly getting the push it needs to claim the top spot in the market.

Speaking of The Breeze ... the other day I heard them playing teenybopper pop song "Genie In A Bottle". Why are they playing kiddie music that their audience will likely find offensive? If they want to play some music from the last 10 years, that's fine, but they should leave the polarizing children's stuff to sister station Hit 106, 94.3 The Point, and all the rest.

Back to JRZ - GM is just being cheap, that's all there is to it. If you're going to change, at least provide the area with a format it can actually use: oldies, easy listening (a la Easy 93.1 in South Jersey), alternative rock, conservative talk, or smooth jazz. Can we expect a similar cost-cutting measure in the future with WMMR, WDHA and WRAT? The Rat took a big hit in this last book, and all three are basically the same station. They must be micromanaging them, because there is really no way of telling them apart in terms of music. All go very heavy on classic rock and shy away from anything heavier than, say, Godsmack. At this rate, if they did a "trimulcast" and you're one of those people that only listens for the music, you probably won't even notice a difference.

I do wonder how much WJRZ's boost in the ratings had to do with going all-Christmas early... but nonetheless, I don't think going Magic is going to help the station since there are so many other pieces of the "soft rock variety" pie. Mind you, I don't think this is as big of a loss as G-Rock since a lot of the area can get WOGL or WTKU, plus there's NJ 101.5 on weekends, and The Breeze plays a lot of classic hits (skewing too young would indeed be a mistake on their part). But it's still a change for the worse - they could've gone with something not represented in the area. If they had to go the simulcast route, they could've returned to "classic" oldies as a simulcast with WMTR.

The weird thing is that the first sign of this format change was magic1001.com being registered with Greater Media, and that site still doesn't redirect to WJRZ's page. Instead they're using the domain magicvariety.com.

One other thing I noticed... speaking of G-Rock... apparently Terrie Carr is doing weekends on Magic 98.3 (and possibly 100.1 as well?) now.

If she's back at GM she should be a station like WDHA or WRAT.....When she was PD at WDHA the station sounded great.
