I’m in South Florida for a while and happened to be right by a WMXJ promotion featuring Mindy Lang. I thought why not and I’m certainly glad I did. I’ve met Mindy briefly a number of times in the past but this time, I thought it was timely and special for a number of reasons.
27 years at the same station. It’s rare indeed. While the role of talent is often debated, it’s still nice to see live and local exists as it does on Magic 102.7. Longevity creates what I consider an extended family feeling among some listeners such as myself. We experience the good times and even the bad times. There are those familiar voices when we sometimes need them the most.
It just so happened Stuart Elliott was there too. Honestly, I had no idea what he looked like even in his 96X days. He brought back many wonderful memories I had when I lived in S Fla. When I mentioned my user name for this board, I loved the reactions. It was funny in both recalled my posts suggesting Stu in at least a weekend gig. With radio, I never rule anything out.
As I drove away, I realized the right talent is an asset and not a liability. Magic 102.7 has been fortunate to have hired some very good and talented people over the years. Listeners in South Florida have been fortunate the hybrid oldies/classic hits format did not have a different owner that would have killed it. I felt like I visited with a beloved relative I don’t often see. Radio can be such a personal medium when all those ingredients are just right.
With so much on my mind due to family illness, this little radio event meant the world to me. Thanks Mindy for making me feel so special today! Ho Ho Ho, it's Magic!
