Magic 105

I just read on Fox 16's website that Magic 105 is going off the air. Is that true? Are they shutting down 105.1 totally or will there be a format change? If this is true, its a shame what has happened to one of the greatest stations Little Rock has ever known.

I did some digging and CC is doing some moving and shaking. Magic 105 is essentially no more! They are stunting All Beatles songs til March 3, when "The Wolf" moves over from 106.7 and 105.1 will become, "105.1, The Wolf". 106.7, will become "Tom-FM", which will essentially be adult/variety hits. In other words, their playlist will increase to over 1,000 songs. I was wondering when the Bob/Jack/Tom FM would come to Little Rock. March 3 should be an interesting day for listeners in Little Rock.

Don't forget that 106.7 will also be spun off if/when Clear Channel goes private. So, any format there may be short-lived.

In that case, I believe I read recently where approval was given for Clear Channel to go private. What is the story with 106.7FM? Does CC no longer own that station?

Mmmm! So much red meat!

1. For about the last five years, Clear Channel has been deathly afraid of promoting/marketing the Classic Country format (a.k.a. The Wolf) on 106.7, in dread fear that it would cut into KSSN's numbers. Why the flip-flop now--unless 105.1 will be the frequency/facility that gets spun off and CC is trying to pump some life into it by any means necessary?

2. What happens to Sharpe and Roger and Nathan, who busted their butts to pull Magic out of the morning dumps after that brilliant Bob And Tom move?

3. Why would someone of the stature and TALENT of Tom Wood continue to put his name on anything done by the corporation [EDIT]?

4. Why didn't Clear Channel turn Magic over--COMPLETELY--to someone who had a CLUE about Classic Rock (Tom Wood, f'rinstance) and get out of its own way? Is it because it's more important to have somebody to BLAME things on than to have success without adhering to the Corporate Line?

5. What are the relative benefits of having better deck chairs on the Titanic?

Well, that's about enough bile and venom for one sitting, except to opine that the only thing Clear Channel really knows about radio is how to screw it into the ground.

Cynically Yours,
Rigby

CC still owns the station. 106.7 will be put into trust if the deal to sell Clear Channel to the private equity group ever closes. The trust will have to operate the station independently of Clear Channel and will sell it when Clear Channel finds a buyer.

Re: Magic 105 and Beaker Street

I don't keep up with CC and didn't know that they had to spin off any LR properties... But if that is so, I suppose it makes more sense for CC to keep the bigger signal (105.1) and keep control of the second country format in the market. If whoever eventually buys 106.7 were to really compete with KSSN, I suppose things could become challenging for CC. With Magic's numbers being low 12+, it gives them an excuse to make the change now.

It is sad to lose the second longest lived format in Little Rock, but now that it is done, we should celebrate the success of Magic 105 and Tom Wood and his staff for what they have accomplished there. Not many people in radio have held down the exact same job for 28 years. 28 years!!! I "discovered" radio in 1980, which I believe is the year that Magic 105 launched. Their transmitter was on that mountain between Conway and LR (near Mayflower) and they were hard to pick up in Southeast Arkansas, but I enjoyed listening when I could. KSSN is the only station that has remained in it's format for all that length of time. More than half the stations currently in LR didn't even exist back then, or were located elsewhere and subsequently moved in.

Let's also celebrate Clyde Clifford and Beaker Street. The first time I heard Beaker Street was on the last day of KAAY. Somewhere I still have a tape of his last hour on the Mighty 1090 leading up to midnight when the station went off the air for a while, then returned with the preaching. Please tell me Clyde Clifford has a place on Tom-FM.

Little Rock has always had some gems on the radio dial, and Tom Wood and Clyde Clifford are two of the people responsible for this. KAAY and Magic 105 won't soon be forgotten.

In the corporate world, heritage, loyalty, and all those other idealistic notions don't mean crap. They never have, really, but my recollection is that stations run by broadcasters instead of bean counters would try to develop and nurture a station's heritage and staff because they knew if that were sucessful then the money would come. Not today. For instance, how long do you think it would take for CC to toss Bob Robbins' cowboy hat out into the street if the revenue went down?

It may be the times, it may be the 21st centruy audience, but whatever, that's the way it is... The notion of building a good product to attract revenue doesn't seem too popular any more.

It'll be interesting as far as who the DJ's will be on the new Tom-FM. Whether Beaker Street will be around is anyone's guess. BTW, whatever happened to Anastasia? I knew she was doing the 7-12 shift for a while and then when Magic 105 picked up Alice Cooper, she moved to the midnight-6 shift.

Kevin Kelly,
If you ever find that last recording of KAAY, I would certainly enjoy getting a copy of it from you.

I listened to Beaker Street and the rest of KAAY when I was growing up near Gainesville, Missouri.
I still feel a bit of pride when I get to work alongside David Treadway. He's been telling me about the history of the station.

Thanks!

Anastasia is alive and well on 933 The Eagle KMJX Fayetteville...

She has been doing the midday show there for at least 7 years....

Her shows on Magic 105 were always voicetracked...

BTW.....I think that Magic 105 went downhill in early 2001..That was when they just started playing nothing but classic rock with no new songs whatsoever...

I think that was a BIG MISTAKE...

In the mid 90's, alot of album rockers in this country started to play NOTHING but new music, totally dividing their fanbase, driving away people that had been listening to certain stations for years. During that time, Magic 105 stuck to their guns and played a wonderful mix of new grunge and classic rock..

"If It Ain't Broke....Don't Fix It"......

The early part of this decade is the time that Tommy Smith started losing his "Rock-N-Roll Breakfast", if I'm not mistaken. Wasn't Dave Elswick a member of his show. The station really started to lose listeners after Tommy left Magic 105. I understand that "Nights with Alice Cooper" will be dropped altogether and "Beaker Street" is moving to the HD2 channel that Magic has on the internet, if I read the article in Monday's ADG Section B Page 1 correctly.

'Scuse me, podjos and podjetts...
Is it just that I'm an old hippy from Stuttgart, who remembers when KAAY was KTHS, out of Hot Springs...then moved to LR,
with the Xmtr at ?Wrightsville? ... then, very early '60s, became KAAY, with that pre-format "Baby Elephant Walk" boogie ...
but wasn't Clyde Clifford's program Bleeker Street?

Hey, kudzooter!

As far as I know, Clyde's show was always (and still is? ) Beaker Street. You can find out more and/or email Clyde at www.beakerstreet.com. There are some (typically) interesting comments about the future of the program at the link, as well.

sportsannouncer, what about that domino effect?

Would you care to elaborate? I'm quite aware that nobody watches radio stations more closely than other stations do, so I'm very interested in what you see coming!

I think that Tom-FM will cause other AC stations to tweak or either change their formats entirely. With a "play everything" type of format versus the rigid formats that a lot of AC stations play, a lot of these stations could potentially lose listeners and revenue. Just like when "The Wolf" moves to 105.1 FM, which I believe is a 81,000 watt transmitter, I think it will have an effect on the smaller country stations around. With Clear Channel having KSSN 96(100k watt) and The Wolf(81k), its going to be a very formidable lineup as far as country and classic country that I believe, a lot of the smaller country stations just can't compete with.

Not a chance that AC's will make format changes because of Tom FM. Little Rock is grossly under AC'ed. The only station even close to an AC is B-98.5, and it's not going anywhere. I suppose it could tweak its format a little, but I wouldn't expect that either. It didn't have to do much when Mix 94.9 signed on.
