ANY IDEA WHEN THEY'LL BE THROUGH WITH THEIR SIGNAL UPGRADE??

> ANY IDEA WHEN THEY'LL BE THROUGH WITH THEIR SIGNAL UPGRADE??

Not long at all. In fact I wouldn't be surprised to see it before the end of the month.

Don't expect too much with the power increase, though, even if 35,000 watts seems pretty potent it's not that much greater than their current 25,000. In fact, their primary service area will be increased by just a few miles.

Also despite what was stated in a recent article about KMGS the 1000-watt nighttime power isn't likely to be increased. It looks like it's pretty well maxed out from the site near Lewisville because of the protection they have to give to KFXR 1190, co-channels KRDY San Antonio and WYLL Chicago, as well as KFAQ 1170 Tulsa.

They may have been testing it earlier today (around 10:30). There
was severe phase cancellation while driving down SH-121 near the
night site, leading me to believe that the Decatur and Lewisville
transmitters were in simultaneous operation for a while.

They were originally stunting with an all-Motown format, and have now broadened to a rhythmic oldies format. So their playlist has gotten larger and more diverse.

Probably about the time you locate the Caps Lock on your keyboard.

THAT'S REAL FUNNY, THEY'RE LOOKING FOR GOOD COMEDIANS AT THE IMPROV. APPLY IN ADVANCE.

Caps Lock ... left side of the keyboard next to the letter "A".

Remember the 10KW increase is also going into a directional array which adds gain...thus the 10KW increase seems like a 30-50KW increase after the antenna gain! (Think ERP here as in FM) I have not looked at the FCC data to see what gain the day array has..

1160 really doesnt have to "protect" 1190....only co- (and somewhat 1st adj depending on pattern, etc) channel stations

Are you saying that 1160 could have placed their towers a mile away from 1190 in South Irving?

Depending on power output, array, etc, it's possible. Remember, an AM array takes LAND....lots of it for a directional....trying to find land inside the Metroplex is hard enough..I am not sure WHY they went so far out of town for the new sites unless they wanted to buy CHEAP land....(ROI makes a difference) BTW look at 950 and 980 in Houston.......their tower sites are within 10 miles of each other.

I don't know why KMGS is way over in Wise County either, unless it's the cheap land like you said. Or maybe that was the only way they could configure the pattern to include the bulk of the metroplex, considering all the adjacent channel stations on their previous frequency of 1150, along with KFAQ 1170 Tulsa.

BTW, that's not a good example you cited. The actual distance between KPRC and KRTX is 35 miles during the day and 36 miles at night.

Hmm thought it was much closer than that...(maybe its 1010 site I am thinking about).....
But still, its not that far in AM land.....

I often thought 1150 Highland Park was a joke since its night power of 6 watts and the pattern barely covered LBJ to 75 :)

But sometimes that 6 watts (uh-huh, sure) would come slamming across Dallas. Oops, somebody forgot on purpose.

Interesting fact about 1150, which began as KVIL, an AC station running 500 watts daytime only: in the mid-60's there was a time when they were on the air about 16 hours a day! This happened in the summer one year with sign-off set for 7:45 CST (before Daylight Savings was in effect) and their sign-on was at 4:00 A.M.!!! They reasoned that midnight to 6 was allowed by the FCC for testing purposes and they actually announced at sign-on that they were "testing." They would then run music, news, traffic and weather commercial-free (since no spots are allowed during "tests") until their _real_ sign-on time. Pretty gutsy, considering that they ran full power, which by that time was 1000 watts, with that narrow lobe pointed over Highland Park and right toward WJBO Baton Rouge. I don't know if that station complained but in any event the "testing" didn't last very long.
