I'm out of the state for the past few days, and today I come back and hear Christmas music on Magic 98.3! Is this the earliest WMGQ flipped?
It sounds like Now 97.5's Christmas music. 106.7 Lite FM also made the switch.
Yes I do believe they started at Midnight Friday/Early Saturday AM as I was scanning the dial I thought it was either them or KJOY on the Island and it turns out it was definitely Magic. This has to be the earliest attempt at Holiday tunes as far back as I can recall. Perhaps the PPM's in M/S/U had something to do with the decision and to get a jump on 'LTW. While it is ENTIRELY TOO EARLY FOR HOLIDAY MUSIC IMO, I can see WHY the decision was made as it does prove to yield great results time and time again for stations that implement it for the Holiday Season. Having spent quite a chunk of time listening to the station I will give credit where credit is due as the music selection was very good. This can be a very successful move for stations that do it and DO IT RIGHT. Also I guess I am biased as its one of the few "Surprises" and "Oh Wow" reactions that radio delivers now-a-days as a departure from the tight OVER-Tested minute playlist. I heard Dean Martin, Perry Como, Andy Williams and even Sinatra which I have to admit was a REAL TREAT to hear even though they were Christmas songs. By December 1st it will probably have already yielded some degree of "burn out" but as another poster said perhaps they were getting positive feedback in Philly on 97.5 and decided to give it a whirl on Magic too!
Karen Carpenter and ALL of her Greeting Cards sent on November 15th... Who'd a thought?? LOL
