Magic 98.3 off the air today

nd2023

I noticed Magic 98.3 went off the air in the middle of a song earlier this afternoon. I got KJoy 98.3 in its place. A few minutes later Magic came back on the air with dead air, then back in the middle of another song. Wonder what happened.

Wonder what happened.

I wasn't in Central Jersey at the time, but in parts of North Jersey the power went out for about an hour thanks to the record breaking heat. I didn't check to see if any radio stations were effected, but the same kind of thing could have happened to Magic.
The few minutes off the air could have been the time it took to fire up the emergency generator, and the dead air could have been the additional time it took until the computers in the studio were rebooted. Although, you might think that the essential studio equipment would be on a battery UPS, and even the transmitter at a 3-kw station could automatically be kept on long enough with batteries to start an emergency generator.

I once worked at a big news operation that had everything on battery backed UPS, it even had two different power companies supplying power to the same building, and whenever there was a danger of power loss, like with lightning storms, or especially hot days, the diesel power generator was fired up and running until the power outage threat passed.

I used to think it was protective overkill, but the news flow never missed a beat.
