Magic 98.3's Saturday nights

nd2023

Banned
I tuned in to Magic 98.3 tonight and thought I hit the button for 92.3 Now. I heard Rihanna's Disturbia on Magic! And that set off a wave of emotions.

Just a few years ago, I was hearing Elvis Presley, Bobby Vinton, The Platters, and other 50s/60s music Saturday nights on Magic 98.3. I'm a month away from being able to legally drink alcohol, a huge fan of dance music, but I'd rather hear doo-wop than Rihanna on Magic. I remember Magic Memories was flooded with requests and Flo Hansen was way more fun to listen to than whoever's on now.

I guess Magic is now a Hot AC. Since The Point is now a "CHR" modern AC's are getting smaller. But genres like dance and alternative are now Internet only stations.

Tonight I was letting one of my friends scan through the dial in the car, and he put it on Magic which of course was having its "Dance Party" show. My ears perked up when Usher's "Yeah!" came on, complete with Lil Jon screaming in the background. They even left in Ludacris' rap verse! After that the DJ made a comment like "One great hit after another... well I don't know about that one" before going into Maxine Nightingale. Then it was Akon's "Dangerous" (again with rapping intact) followed by Eddie Money's "Walk On Water".

I'm not normally one to complain about AC stations playing not-so-soft music, but I have to wonder exactly what demographic they are going for with this. Are people who want to hear Akon really going to tune into Magic 98.3, and if they do, will they really stick around when an oldie comes on? Plus I'm sure that even on Saturday nights, there are still businesses that want to have a non-offensive soundtrack in the background, and Lil Jon's chants don't exactly fit the bill. Furthermore, I don't think songs "Walk On Water" or anything by Hall & Oates (who they played later) fit in very well with the "dance party" concept. The whole thing just sounds like a slightly more rhythmic-leaning Jack FM, and I don't see how it is at all consistent with their normal format. Then again, I can't remember the station ever grabbing my attention like this, so I guess they achieved something.

I think a disco party like what's on WEBE 108 would better fit the demographics of Magic 98.3. You'd expect to hear Usher on a Hot AC, not a mainstream AC.

Wonder what the late Julian Breen would say about the format he created that's located on the station where he began his career. This may be one of the last remaining Magics left in the country.

Looks like we weren't the only ones put off by this experiment. Last night they were back to their normal music mix.

In fact, the past 2 Saturday nights were normal and jockless.
Ever since Flo Hansen left Magic 98.3, they haven't had any good Saturday night shows that lasted as long as Saturday Night Magic Memories.
How about Saturday Night Disco? It works on WEBE 108 and 100.7 WLEV, both stations have played disco on Saturday nights for years so it's probably successful. WLEV's show won't compete with Magic 98.3 because there's the 100.7 translator in Edison.
