magic 989 now jack fm and joy 106.3 now magic 106.3

I was mildly startled when I heard one commercial break around 4pm today. Haven't heard any more since. IIRC, the first commercial in the break was for the military, the second was for K & G Fashion Superstore (sounded as if it may have been intended as an urban buy), and the third was for a retailer (I believe it was Walgreens).

Two weeks since the flip, and I haven't yet heard Jack-FM mention their Facebook page. Maybe they're waiting for the disgruntled-listener heat to die down further. Of course, even in today's social-media crazed world I'd imagine Facebook would be far down the list of priorities for a station early in the launch period.

As far as online presence, Jack-FM currently appears to be going stealth.  They do have a Facebook page which they update maybe once a day.  But they don't mention it on the air.  They do (very infrequently) mention their website (mycolumbusjack.com) on-air, and at the bottom of that page there's a link that leads you to a DEFUNCT, never-updated version of their FB page with 11 Likes.  Further, the email address they give doesn't work.

Even if online presence isn't their priority at the moment, all of this -- and more importantly lack of any billboards, etc -- suggests to me that Radio One basically doesn't care about getting traction for Jack-FM.   More evidence that a sale is in the works?

All a lot of speculation, I know, but why wouldn't they go to the very-minor, no-cost effort of making their FB known?  They only have 59 Likes as of the time I'm posting this.  Surprised it's even that many, given that it's stealth.  I found it by Googling:

If no one is really working on the page and it's an afterthought, I can see why they aren't actively promoting it right now. There are stations like Click 101.5 in Dayon that had a strong social media presence from Day One, but the demo they are after are heavy social media users....and they have a PD who is well versed in SM.

But as I mentioned they are promoting their website on-air, at least a little.  If they're going to do that they shouldn't have a link to a defunct FB page, as well as a non-working email address.  They are updating both the website and the main (stealth) FB page daily, which is about as often as many stations do so.  Even if the demo isn't heavy social media users, it seems like an owner that really cared about the station would address such easily--fixable problems.  We're probably talking minutes of effort.

I heard (it is only a rumor) that North American approached the folks at R1 about Columbus a few months ago and kicked the tires, but nothing has happened. Chances are NABCO wasn't willing to offer what R1 wants for the market.

I guess this is the time for R1 to shine with Jack and Power.

Travatto comes from San Antonio where he programmed a very Adult leaning CHR. WNCI is a natural fit, but wouldn't be surprised if he helps shore up those Women 25-54 numbers with the station. It already does well there, but the money lives in that demo...so maybe a little less rap while still being very CHR.

Power should take advantage of this and take Power to a Mainstream Rhythmic. Besides, it bills better than Urban any day in PPM Markets. Jack is already going for the buck, so Power should naturally follow.

Still don't know why they haven't flipped Power back to rhythmic, or why they flipped it from rhythmic to urban in the first place.

*IF* potential new ownership is in the wings for 98.9:  Maybe RadiOhio (Dispatch) is finally ready to expand?  They recently bought Columbus Monthly, The Other Paper & Suburban News Publications, so maybe they're in acquisition mode.  They might have the resources to do it.  Jack would give them some good demos to sell if it's successful.  Could be a good sales pairing with sports talk. For the first time in years they would have a music-intensive station that wouldn't have to do double-duty with OSU play-by-play and coaches shows.

It just could be that Radio One knows that in the PPM era, they are going to have to get away from doing only Urban formats to survive.
You bet! That is the only reason they are doing it, Liggins is kicking and screaming right now.

RadiOhio is owned by the one and only Wolfe family. If anyone has money to do anything in Columbus it is the Wolfes!

Was changing Mojo in Cincy back to broad-appeal jammin' oldies the first serious move away from urban formats? Any idea how they're doing sales-wise, especially compared to when they were urban AC?

I don't know how much going back to Jammin' Oldies is a real move away from Urban for WMOJ. The station still sounds pretty "Radio One". They did just hire Pat Barry for mornings. Most of the non-Urban formats that Radio One has aired have been inherited...such as Kiss Country and Z93 in Dayton.

Radio one inherited those dayton signals and Louisville stations as part of the Clear Channel Jacor merger. Radio One sold those 2 market properties to Mainline Broadcasting a few years ago.
