It just could be that Radio One knows that in the PPM era, they are going to have to get away from doing only Urban formats to survive.
You bet! That is the only reason they are doing it, Liggins is kicking and screaming right now.

RadiOhio is owned by the one and only Wolfe family. If anyone has money to do anything in Columbus it is the Wolfes!

Yeah but with them owning a news paper, A Tv station, and two radio stations create ownership issues if they tried to buy up a cluster in the market?

Go figure. After one month and a week after the swapping of frequency for majic and Jack arriving at 98.9, the Columbus Dispatch mentions the format changes to those stations.

Because like most newspapers these days they don't have a radio and tv critic like they used to. Plus they think everybody gets on a computer to read the latest news these days. Though it would still be nice for the newspaper to let us in on the format changes the day after it happens rather than a month later so that those who don't have a computer can know about it.

I saw that posting on radio-info.com this morning and was going to post about it here on this thread but I saw you beat me to it.

I've been watching that Houston FM News 92.1 thread for the past few weeks
Personnel, I took it with a gain of salt after seeing what Radio One did with Jack FM here
and didn't believe Radio One would pull it off but since they did, I have my opinion if it will work or not.

I wish them all the success in Houston. Houston can support an all News station if done properly and like some have said on
the Houston board, Radio One has no expertise in this very expensive All News format. Also, they need a better signal then 92.1 can provide. I doubt it will be around much longer then a year or two on 92.1.

Now, If CBS Houston pulled off an FM All News station on one of their competitive FM signals, then that would work Houston.
I was expecting CBS Houston to pull off a FM all news format in Houston and they didn't.

Someone had already suggested on the Houston board that Radio One has an LMA in place for 92.1.

Speaking of Jack... Apperently Radio One is semi-serious about this station having some success...

I saw Jack-FM advertised on a electronic billboard on Rome Hilliard Rd N just past the Mcdonalds (near Renner Rd on the west side)

Also seen a Jack-FM billboard on Roberts Rd headed N towards Wilcox Rd on the west side.

Apparently Columbus is NOT the only market that Radio One has decided to do something "non urban"...

They are launching a "news" station in the Houston market blowing up their Gospel "Praise" in that market...

Here is an update on the new R1 news station in Houston, Texas.

http://mikemcguff.blogspot.com/2011/11/news-92-fm-krois-launch-delayed-plus.html

The sign on date has been pushed back a few days, from next Monday morning to next Thursdays morning. Maybe an indication they don't quite know what they are getting themselves into.

Also, Noticed this was just posted on the Houston board:

Does anyone know why the launch was pushed back ??

An insider told me that "real-time" rehearsals started this week, and a few extra days were needed to polish things. Also appears the station is still finalizing staffing.

I am curious what the station will run overnights 10p-5a and on weekends; have not seen any info on that.

Jack-FM is now playing lots of listener calls, e.g., "Hi Jack, this is Tammy from Dublin.  I had a great time last night.  Do you want to go steady?"  (That's not one of the more clever ones, but I just heard it so I'm sure I've got it right.)

Anyone care to wager a guess as to the proportion that are really local calls, vs. the proportion created by the station or consultant (if any)?  Just based on the speech patterns I'm pretty sure at least 25-30% are really local, but beyond that I really have no idea.

Overall, I continue to be quite impressed by the station

I really like the station as well. I listened all weekend. The listener calls are pretty funny, which is half the reason I listen. That, and of course the fact that you NEVER know what they'll play next. Reminds me a lot of Fly 92.9 out of Dayton, but better actually. More variety. I listened to 92.9 for 2 weeks straight and knew their playlist daily. Keep up the good work Jack!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Jack either, and I know exactly what they're gonna play next. A song that I've heard a million times throughout my life. That's personal opinion though. I'm sure it'll do good in the ratings, cause people wanna hear overplayed songs from all the rock/pop formats lumped into one station. Screw this, I'm calling Jack FM to complain, just to see if it gets played on one of the station id's. "Man, y'all suck where's my gospel music?" lol

Familiarity breeds contempt. How accurate that is. The reason we hold truth in such respect is because we have so little opportunity to get familiar with it. - Mark Twain

jack sucks...go to pandora or spotify or make your own playlist. this is lazy radio at best.

Wilson, just for craps and giggles, I'm going to start a new thread with what we all want on Columbus' FM stations. Not poking fun at you or your comment, I just think it would be interesting to see what everyone wants.

Go for it! I'll comment on it of course, but that post pop ups every 3 months lol.

Well that thread hasn't started yet, so I'll just briefly indicate that what I want is exactly what I created for myself and others on WCRS. Get the thread going and I'll (slightly) elaborate.
