Magic Act

Everyone now thinks that they have to rip off the Jack format and intentionally program trainwreck segues but they missed the whole purpose of it with Jack. Jack did it because it was different and now 18-24 months later in most larger markets that is wearing off big time (with exceptions like Dallas). Once someone else does it the surprise factor is gone and you're left with something that's just annoying.

It wouldn't be the first time someone has tried to copy JACK - and fail horribly at it.

As to the rumor that JACK is failing - it ain't so. New York's 101.1 should never have been flipped to JACK. Hell, *I* said THAT! (The real problem was that it was put on "sacred ground", instead of replacing Howard on 92.3, and NY never got truly over it.)

JACK is still on HD2, if CBS thought it was a piece of crap, it would have been gone. It did fine - just not as good as 'CBS-FM is doing filling the "oldies" hole. As to new business, Houston (market #6) finally got JACK a month ago and the beat goes on.

It's too bad that Forever didn't make the call and do variety hits correctly.

Are they streaming MAJIC?

Not yet. Forever mentioned plans to stream the Altoona and State College stations last spring, but I haven't heard anything about it recently. It looks like 3wz stopped the streaming.

I think you can look for the little guys like Forever and First Media to stop the streaming for a while..(little compared to Clear Channel and CBS) reason being the cost. The Record companies want extra fees to be paid for what is played over the stream in addition to what is played on the radio the little guys can't afford this and therefore have had to shut down the streams. Until the mess is cleared up in Washington don't look for anybody else to stream, even Clear Channel joined in the day of silence by shutting down their streams for a day to protest the move along with MTV, VH1, Yahoo, AOL Music, ect.

The Forever group in Johnstown still has the streams up and running. Actually it is surprising how many small stations do stream, I guess they all recognize the growing listenership of internet radio in the office buildings.

I wouldn't count on that too much longer if the Record Companies get what they want

So, Majic 99.5 has been up and running for 3+ months, now; they've got a quarter's worth of Arbitron under their belt if that means anything, anymore. How's it doing?

Is Majic the talk of the town? Has it been a hit with advertisers? Did it ever settle down into what might be considered a "format?"

Surprisingly, Majic is the talk of the town. The excitement of listeners is off the charts! I bet revenues are way up as advertisers demand push the price of commercials to an all-time high.

Guess we shall have to see what the numbers hold but honestly I have not heard any buzz about Majic at all. Don't hear it in any businesses, don't know anyone who likes it. I listen on occasion out of curiousity but typically end up tuning out as soon as a tune I don't care for comes on. We may all be shocked when the book drops, but I just don't see this thing flying for long and I sure don't think they will put a dent into the "Z", but you never know. We all know how fatally flawed the book is so I may eat these words in a few short months

Spoken like a true radio pundit. "Reality becomes what I say it is." Majic's rates are at or below their am stations. I know of which I speak. Ask any advertiser currently running spots on this station. They peddled $11 rates to me not so very long ago and for every two you bought, you got a freebie. They've only inched up from these intial promo rates. This station will never catch on because they've removed the human element. People like jocks. They don't like jocks that run off at the mouth or blather on endlessly but they like hearing a live human voice on the air. Corporate radio does not understand this and never will. They want money coming in and none going out.

It's just absolutely inconceivable that this can anything but sarcasm. I mean, you're joking, right?

I am not sure anyone's rates are where they should be these days, in part due to the fact that this market is oversaturated. Back in "the day" there were maybe 4-5 key players...now we have 3WZ, Joe, The Bus, B94.5, WOWY, Qwk, Majic, G101, Froggy, WRSC, WMAJ, WBLF....and sorry if I missed anyone else. And let's not forget about Ipods and Satellite Radio which we have to contend with. Fact is, the population has not skyrocketed yet the # of choices has nearly doubled (in part due to Forever bringing outside signals into the area like they did with Majic). Seems to me we are reaching a point where many stations are destined to fail due to the pie being cut too thin and the fact that there are only so many mass appeal formats to go around in the first place in a market this size.
Perhaps the real Majic is watching the audience and the ad revenue disappear???

(Probably does not help either that formatically Majic is a mess. I have heard Jack stations before and while I am not a huge fan of the format, there are those that are executed well and those that are not and sadly, Majic is not. Wanna hear a good one, dial up Pittsburgh's Bob-FM perhaps?)
