Julian Breen, the man who created the "Magic Music" format launched on WMGK, died October 29th of panceatic cancer. He was 63.

Julian was a long time APD and PD at Top 40 WABC when it was the most listened to station in the US. After a stint at KYA as PD, he returned to his native New Jersey, joined Greater Media, and started the AC format on 102.9 among other stations. He continued his career after GM as a consultant.

He is also remembered for getting Howard Stern his first California affiliate, airing the show on a delayed basis.

Re: Magic Music creator dies-Julian Breen

Julian also created the nostalgia format at WPEN. At a time when people called him crazy, he proceeded with blowing up the old "95PEN" Oldies format (which he too created) and WPEN became a nostalgia station Labor Day Weekend 1979. At a staff meeting soon after, all he asked of us (the air talent) was "Get me a 3 share guys so we can sell this turkey". We did much better. Julian was a brilliant programmer, tough taskmaster, full of passion of love for the business and true pro in every sense of the word. All of us learned a lot from Julian. It was good working for him and with him. I will miss his email streams of funny factoids and other weirdness, simply signed....."noted without comment, JHB".
